COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Kailyn Dudukovich notched her third goal of the opening weekend but Buffalo scored a late goal and slipped by Ohio State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

How it Happened

Dudukovich collected her third goal of the season in the 26th minute. Freshman Nette-Nina Hiltunen played a ball out of the back to Peyton McNamara near midfield and she made a great pass ahead to Dudukovich who finished inside the box.

Just over a minute later, Buffalo got the equalizer as Leah Wengender scored on a perfectly placed shot inside the left post. The score remained tied through the rest of the half.

In the second half, each team had a couple of quality scoring chances but neither could convert. Following a Buffalo corner kick in the 84th minute, Olivia Bizzoni collected a ball near midfield and found Arianna Zumpano inside the box. Her shot found the back of the net to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead.

The Buckeyes then pushed forward and the best chance came in the 86 minute as McNamara’s shot from the left side of the box snuck narrowly over the upper-right corner of the goal. It was a beautiful shot that did everything but go in. Buffalo then held on for the 2-1 win.

Notes

  • The goal by Dudukovich was her third of the young season. She is now just the fourth Buckeye to score three goals in the first two games of a season. She joins Lindsey Eckles (1999), Lisa Grubb (2001) and Emma Sears (2021 spring).
  • Freshman Nette-Nina Hiltunen had an assist on the goal, notching her first collegiate point.
  • Senior Peyton McNamara recorded her first assist of the year and the seventh of her career.
