BOSTON – Prior to the July 5th game against the Los Angeles Angels, the Boston Red Sox returned infielder Christian Arroyo from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned infielder/outfielder Michael Chavis to Worcester.
In addition, the Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Eduard Bazardo from the minor league injured list, recalled him from Worcester, and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right lat strain.
The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 39.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.
Arroyo, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 24 (retroactive to June 21) with a right knee contusion. He appeared in two rehab games with Worcester, making one start at designated hitter and one at second base. The right-handed hitter has batted .264 (33-for-125) with four home runs and a .756 OPS in 41 games for the Red Sox this season, making each of his 33 starts at second base. Each of his four home runs has either tied the game or given the Red Sox a lead, including the club’s lone grand slam on June 16 against the Atlanta Braves.
Chavis, 25, has appeared in 20 games over four stints with Boston this season. He is 12-for-58 (.207) with one home run, four doubles, 11 runs scored, and four RBI, making 10 starts at second base and four at first base. Chavis has played in 24 games with Worcester, batting .263 (25-for-95) with six home runs and an .801 OPS, with all six of his homers coming in the last 10 games. In 157 big league games (2019-21), he has hit .238 (131-for-551) with 24 home runs and 81 RBI.
Bazardo, 25, has not allowed a run in 3.0 innings over two relief appearances with Boston this season, the first outings of his major league career. Ranked by MLB.com as the club’s No. 28 prospect, the right-hander began the season at Boston’s Alternate Training Site. He appeared in four games with Triple-A Worcester before being placed on the injured list on May 22.
