DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced that the club has signed righthanded pitcher José Ureña to a one-year Major League contract.

Ureña joins the Tigers after spending the first six Major League seasons of his career with Miami, where he posted a 32-46 record and 4.60 ERA (597.0IP/305ER), walking 208 and striking out 406. He showed great versatility over the course of his time with the Marlins, making 98 starts and 44 bullpen appearances, the former of which ranks as the 13th-most in franchise history.

“Once José became available, we had him identified as a player that could come in and help our ballclub win games,” said Al Avila, Detroit Tigers Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. “We’re excited to add his experience pitching at a high level, and know he’ll contribute to our young staff in significant ways. José has a great ability to navigate a lineup and limit damage, while keeping his team in the game, which is exactly the stability we’re looking for heading into the 2021 season.”

Having particular success during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Ureña combined to post a 23-19 record and 3.90 ERA (343.2IP/149ER). During that span he was tied for fifth among qualified pitchers with an average fastball velocity of 95.8 MPH (others, Michael Fulmer, Mike Foltynewicz and Tyler Glasnow).

The 29 year-old native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 208 pounds, and was initially signed as an international amateur free agent by Miami on August 28, 2009.

In a corresponding move for this signing, catcher Eric Haase has been designated for assignment.
