Miami RedHawks beat Vermont 70-69 in thrilling comeback fashion on Hunter’s buzzer-beater

OXFORD, Ohio — Darweshi Hunter’s three-point buzzer beater helped the Miami University men’s basketball team secure a 70-69 victory against Vermont Friday afternoon in non-conference action. Hunter and Anderson Mirambeaux each scored 17 points to lead the RedHawks (5-6, 0-0 MAC), while Evan Ipsaro added 13. Aaron Deloney scored 13 points to lead the Catamounts (9-5, 0-0 America East).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A mid-range jump shot from Ipsaro gave Miami the first points of the game. Mirambeaux scored back-to-back buckets in the paint to remain ahead 6-3. The Catamounts claimed a 10-9 lead with 13:25 left in the first half. Ipsaro responded with a three-point shot and, Hunter put in a jumper from the free-throw line to make it 14-13 in favor of Miami.
  • Vermont took their largest lead of the half at 21-15, before Mirambeaux and Jaquel Morris put in a pair of buckets from the paint. Ipsaro knocked down a shot from the halfcourt logo as the shot clock expired to bring the Red and White within three at 25-22. Mabrey put in a couple shots from beyond the arc to tie the game at 28 apiece with 2:46 remaining in the first half. The Catamounts entered halftime with a 34-32 advantage.
  • Miami scored on its first offensive trip in the second half, as a layup from Hunter knotted it at 34-34. Hunter wasted no time finding his shot, putting in a baseline pull-up jumper to give Miami its first lead since the midpoint of the first half. The Catamounts did not give in, going on a run to reclaim a six-point lead at 46-40. A fading touch shot in the paint from Mirambeaux and a three from Bradley Dean brought the RedHawks back within one at 46-45. The Catamounts scored the next six points to stretch their lead to 51-45 with 10:09 to play.
  • Hunter scored five straight points for the Red and White to make it a one possession game at 55-52. Vermont once again attempted to pull away, as they took their largest lead of the game at 63-54. An offensive rebound from Bryce Bultman led to him getting to the free-throw line to make it a 63-58 ball game. A full-court press from Miami resulted in a steal and a pair of free throws to stay within five points at 66-61. Ipsaro forced a jump ball, which resulted in a Hunter three from the corner of the floor to make it 66-64. Vermont went on to make a couple of free throws to take a four-point lead at 68-64. Ipsaro knocked down a shot from behind the three-point line with four seconds left to trail by one at 68-67. Vermont went on to split a pair of free throws to lead 69-67 with seconds remaining. As the game clock expired, Hunter heaved a half-court shot for a 70-69 victory for Miami.

GAME NOTES:

  • Miami outscored Vermont 12-3 in the final minute of play.
  • Dean and Mabrey led all players with two steals each.
  • Hunter and Mirambeaux recorded a game-high 17 points.
