AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior punter Colton Spangler has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Ray Guy Award, it was announced by The Augusta Sports Council on Wednesday.
It’s the second consecutive year that Spangler has been named on the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation’s top collegiate punter in the FBS.
Spangler is one of just five Big Ten punters to make the list.
A 2022 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, Spangler started all 13 games for the Terps and punted 56 times for 2,522 yards (45.0 average). He pinned 16 punts inside the 20 and booted 12 punts over 50 yards.
Spangler’s yard per punt average ranked 16th nationally in 2022 and he currently ranks third all-time at Maryland in punting average for his career (43.0 yards per punt).
In mid-November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select 10 semifinalists. A national body of FBS sports information directors, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists to be announced on November 22. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation’s top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards show, airing on ESPN in December 2023.
