CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Ian Happ have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension covering the 2024-26 seasons. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Happ, 28, last season was named to his first N.L. All-Star Team and went on to set career marks with a .271 batting average, 42 doubles, 72 RBI, 155 hits, 252 total bases and 158 games played for the Cubs. He earned his first career N.L. Gold Glove Award, having led N.L. left fielders with 13 defensive runs saved. His .271 average led N.L. switch-hitters while his 72 RBI and 155 hits ranked second.

Since the start of the 2022 campaign, Happ’s .273 average (166-for-608) leads qualifying N.L. left fielders while his 66 extra-base hits rank second, his .350 on-base percentage rank fourth and his 68 walks are fifth.

Selected by Chicago in the first round (ninth overall) in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Cincinnati, Happ made his major league debut in 2017, appearing in 115 games for Chicago. His 24 home runs that season ranked third-most by a Cubs rookie in franchise history and the second-most ever by a switch-hitting rookie in the N.L. Happ reached the 20-home run mark in 89 career games, becoming the fastest player in Cubs history to reach the 20-homer plateau.

In 688 career major league games, Happ owns a .250 batting average (541-for-2,162) with 312 runs scored, 120 doubles, 10 triples, 105 home runs, 314 RBI and 284 walks that contribute to a .341 on-base percentage. He has played 352 games in left field, recording a .992 fielding percentage (4 E/476 TC) with 17 assists, and appeared in 240 games in center field (.992 fielding percentage) and 69 games in right field (.986 fielding percentage). Happ’s 105 home runs are a franchise mark for a switch-hitter.

Happ graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pa. and attended the University of Cincinnati, where he was a 2015 First-Team All-American and a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist.
