OHIO STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL STAR TAYLOR MIKESELL ADDED TO WADE WATCH LIST

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The WBCA Division I Coaches’ All-America Selection Committee added four student-athletes to the Wade Watch List for the 2023 Wade Trophy on Wednesday with senior guard Taylor Mikesell being one of the individuals added. She joined teammate Jacy Sheldon on the list of now 20 individuals.

Mikesell was named to the midseason top-10 for the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award and the Naismith Women’s Player of the Year Midseason Watch List within the past couple weeks after getting preseason nods for both awards. Mikesell was also selected to the Preseason All-Big Ten team by both the coaches (unanimous) and the media as well as the Wooden Award Preseason and midseason top-25 Watch Lists. She earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Jan. 9 and was on the weekly honor roll on Dec. 5.

Mikesell surpassed another milestone on Feb. 1 at Wisconsin, scoring her 1,000th point as a Buckeye despite this being her second season in Columbus. She is the 36th player in program history to score 1,000 points. Mikesell previously scored her 2,000th career point on Jan. 26 at Indiana.

Mikesell is averaging 18.2 ppg as a Buckeye and 14.1 ppg throughout her collegiate career. She leads the team in scoring with 17.6 ppg overall (eighth in B1G) and 18.0 ppg in conference play (ninth in B1G) as well as three-point shooting (3.1 triples per game, second in B1G) and captured her first Big Ten Player of the Week honors after scoring a season-high 31 points vs. Illinois (1/8). She is ninth in program history with 188 three-pointers made as a Buckeye and recently made her 400th career triple.

The Wade Trophy is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women’s basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.

The WBCA will announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. The winner of the 2023 Wade Trophy will be announced in late March or early April on a date to be determined.
