WESTERVILLE, Ohio – After more than a decade overseeing the program, Otterbein University head football coach Tim Doup has decided to step down.

Doup, a 1992 graduate, has spent almost 20 years on staff as a whole since returning to his alma mater before the 2003 season. He served as offensive coordinator for nine years and then took over the helm in 2012, while also handling an Assistant Athletic Director role.

“I just feel it’s time for a change… both for me and this program,” Doup said. “It’s time to hit the reset button and step away. I can’t express enough what this institution means to me and how much I’ve enjoyed the last 20 years.”

A 2x Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Doup worked with more than 50 All-OAC selections as head coach and helped develop eight All-Americans during his time on staff. He admirably guided the program through the 2019 passing of star defensive lineman Nigel Chatman followed by challenges of the pandemic.

“I am so thankful for the tremendous relationships I have built with players, coaches, other staff members and the entire campus community,” Doup added. “I wish only the best for this entire Cardinal family and will continue supporting all athletics… just from a different vantage point now. The Doup’s will always love Otterbein.”

Doup and his wife, Helyn, have three children that are all currently attending Otterbein. Colton, a three-year starter at linebacker, will graduate this coming spring while twins Kaden and Kennedie are midway through their sophomore years. Kaden served as a backup quarterback this fall, helping beat cross-town rival Capital on Homecoming.

Otterbein will begin a national search for its next head football coach.
