STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State safety Kendal Daniels was named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week for his performance Saturday against Iowa State. It marks the first time he’s earned the honor and the 10th time this season that a Cowboy has earned a Big 12 weekly award.
A redshirt freshman from Beggs, Oklahoma, Daniels created two turnovers and had a game-high 10 tackles as well as 1.5 tackles for loss in OSU’s six-point win over Iowa State.
He forced a first quarter fumble on a two-yard tackle for loss in OSU territory that was recovered by the Cowboys, and then intercepted a third-down pass at the OSU 18-yard line later in the quarter that he returned 12 yards. Daniels also shared a tackle for loss on a 4th-and-1 play with just over five minutes remaining in the game to help seal the Cowboy win.
The performance improved on an already impressive freshman campaign for Daniels, as he is putting together a standout résumé for Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and freshman All-America honors.
With just two games remaining in the regular season, he now leads all Big 12 freshmen in interceptions, tackles, solo tackles, tackles for loss and passes defended. He also ranks in the top 10 among all FBS freshmen in each of those categories, including a No. 1 ranking in interceptions and a No. 3 ranking in solo tackles.
Oklahoma State returns to action Saturday in its final road test of the 2022 season, facing Oklahoma in the Phillips 66® Bedlam game. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
