For the Columbus Crew, the expectations surrounding the inaugural season of MLS NEXT Pro play for the Club’s developmental team, Columbus Crew 2, were very blurred.

The success of Crew 2’s season has been rooted in its exceptional backline. Since allowing two goals in the Club’s opening game against Inter Miami II (March 26) the team’s defensive play has been stellar.

Through the Club’s first six matches, the Black and Gold has racked up a 5-1-0 record, good for first place in the Eastern Conference of the MLS NEXT Pro standings, for a total of 15 points.

In the time since Crew 2’s lone loss of the season to Inter Miami II, the team has delivered clean sheets in four of the team’s next five games played, including Sunday’s win over New England Revolution II. First Team goalkeeper Patrick Schulte has been flawless for Crew 2, as the 21-year-old has delivered three shutouts in as many games started and played, with fellow First Team goalkeeper Brady Scott registering two clean sheets as well.

In all, Crew 2 leads the League in fewest goals conceded (three), while posting a League-high of four shutouts.

Crew 2’s focus is the development of young talent, with two players making a name for themselves as a result of their offensive endeavors. Forward Jacen Russell-Rowe, 19, has been a driving force behind the Black & Gold’s offensive success, leading the Club with four goals through six matches. Helping Crew 2’s potent Crew attack is defender Mohamed Farsi. Farsi has aided in Crew 2’s offensive breakthrough, providing three helpers, without neglecting his defensive duties,.

Throughout the course of Crew 2’s five-game winning streak, the Club has racked up ten goals scored, while only conceding one goal. Overall, the team’s +7 Goal Differential is the second-highest MLS NEXT Pro this season, behind only Houston Dynamo 2 (+8)

Not a bad start for Crew 2, who travels to face New York City FC II.
