COLUMBUS, Ohio – Samuel Buzzas, a defender from Bend, Oregon, and Laurence Wootton, a midfielder from Halstead, England, were named captains of the Ohio State men’s soccer team Wednesday.

Buzzas is in his third season at Ohio State after spending two seasons at Xavier. He elected to use the NCAA-granted extra year (COVID-19) of eligibility to remain in Columbus this season. He has played in 25 games at Ohio State with two goals to his credit.

Wootton, who capped off his freshman season with the Buckeyes in the spring by being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, played in all 10 games with a goal and two assists.

He notched the game-winning goal at Michigan State in a 2-0 win for the Buckeyes. Earlier this month, the Big Ten men’s soccer coaches named Wootton one of the 2021 Players to Watch in the conference.

The Buckeyes get the season underway at 7 p.m. Friday in the annual Wolstein Classic. Ohio State takes on Memphis after Dayton and UAB play at 4 p.m. The Buckeyes face UAB at 5 p.m. Sunday. Dayton and Memphis play earlier in the day at 11 a.m.
