July 26, 2021

Ruckert among the nation’s top tight ends, Banks among the best cornerbacks

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A pair of Ohio State Buckeyes have added watch lists to their respective resumes as tight end Jeremy Ruckert is on the Mackey Award watch list while cornerback Sevyn Banks is among those to be named to the Thorpe Award watch list.

Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by a vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The winner is announced during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards show on December.

The Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation’s top defensive back, will also be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. A group of 10-15 semifinalists will be selected in October and three finalists will be announced in late November. Jeff Okudah was a finalist in 2019 while the Buckeyes’ last Thorpe Award winner was Malcolm Jenkins in 2008.

Ruckert enters his senior season with 28 career receptions for 306 yards and nine touchdowns. He had career highs last years in both receiving yards and touchdowns. Ruckert also finished with multi-touchdown games in wins over Penn State and Clemson.

Banks has played in 28 games over his career with the Buckeyes and started all eight games in 2020 on his way to earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. He finished with 23 tackles – 19 solo – and led the team with seven pass break-ups. Banks capped a College Football Playoff semifinal win over Clemson with an interception on the Tigers’ final drive.
