Hunter Armstrong and Ruslan Gaziev made their Olympic debuts Sunday in Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan — Ohio State swimming’s Hunter Armstrong and Ruslan Gaziev made their Olympic debuts Sunday as they advanced for their respective countries on the second day of competition at the 2020 Tokyo games. Armstrong qualified for the semifinals in the 100m backstroke for the United States and Gaziev helped Canada’s 4x100m freestyle relay to a spot in the finals.

Armstrong was the first Buckeye to race in Tokyo and finished in 53.77 seconds to take fifth in his heat and tie for 15th overall, securing a spot in the event semifinals. The Dover, Ohio native pushed the pace in his semifinal heat as he recorded the second fastest time at the 50m turn. He ultimately finished in 53.21 seconds to tie for ninth overall, missing an Olympic finals appearance by only 0.01 seconds.

Gaziev swam third for the Canadian relay team in its opening heat, helping the team to a 3:13:00 finish and a seventh overall result to qualify for the 4×100 finals. The team went on to take fourth overall in the finals, missing the podium by 0.6 seconds.

Recent Buckeye graduate Matthew Abeysinghe rounds out the contingent of Ohio State swimmers in Tokyo as he represents Sri Lanka in the 100m freestyle on Tuesday, July 27. He will race in the fourth heat of the event starting at approximately 6:09 a.m. ET.
