INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Houston Men’s Basketball program takes its next step in the postseason when it faces Rutgers at 6:10 p.m. (CDT) Sunday on the Unity Court inside Lucas Oil Stadium in the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region Second Round.
 
The sixth-ranked Cougars, who are competing as the No. 2 seed in the Region, earned their ticket to the Second Round in their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament with an 87-56 win over No. 15 seed Cleveland State on Friday night in Bloomington, Ind.
 
The Cougars broke open a close game at the break, outscoring Cleveland State 50-27 in the second half. Houston took advantage of 16 offensive rebounds to lead to 18 second-chance point and outrebounded the Vikings 38-24.
 
Junior guard and All-American Quentin Grimes led six Cougars in double digits with 18 points and four 3-pointers in the first meeting against the Vikings. Freshman guard Tramon Mark totaled 15 points, while sophomore guard Marcus Sasser added 14 points with three treys.
 
Senior forwards Justin Gorham and Brison Gresham posted 10 points apiece, while junior forward Reggie Chaney grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
 
With Friday’s win, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson recorded the 664th victory of his award-winning career and moved into a tie for 38th in NCAA history with legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden.
