St. Bonaventure Earns Men’s Basketball Regular Season Title, Championship Top Seed

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— St. Bonaventure has won the 2021 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Regular Season title, and will be the No. 1 seed for next week’s A-10 Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Air Force Reserve. The 14-team event begins Wednesday in Richmond, Va., with the championship final set for Sunday, March 14 in Dayton, Ohio.ESPN+ will air Wednesday’s first-round games while NBCSN will carry the entire second round Thursday and all four quarterfinal matchups Friday. CBS Sports Network will air the semifinals Saturday at 6:00 and 9:00 pm. The championship final is set for 1:00 pm on CBS Sports as part of their annual Selection Sunday coverage.

The Bonnies finished the regular season with an 11-4 record and a .733 winning percentage to claim the title and top seed, and will receive a double-bye into the quarterfinals. It is the first time in Atlantic 10 history SBU has won the regular season outright. The Bonnies previously shared the regular season title in 1983 and 2016.

In addition to St. Bonaventure, second-seeded VCU (10-4), No. 3 Davidson (7-4) and No. 4 Saint Louis (6-4) earned byes into the quarterfinal round of the championship. The Bonnies play at 11:00 am on Friday at VCU’s Siegel Center, followed by Saint Louis at 1:00 pm at Richmond’s Robins Center. VCU opens play at 3:30 pm at the Siegel Center and Davidson will play in the last quarterfinal at 5:30 pm at the Robins Center.

Seeds five through 10 earn byes into the second round and will play Thursday on NBCSN. Massachusetts (6-4) is seeded fifth and will play the winner of No. 12 La Salle (6-11) and No. 13 Saint Joseph’s (3-9) at 1:00 pm Thursday at the Robins Center. The Explorers and Hawks will meet Wednesday in the first round at 11:00 am at the Siegel Center on ESPN+.

No. 6 George Mason (8-6) will open play Thursday at 5:30 pm at Robins Center against the winner of the late first-round game between No. 11 George Washington (3-5) and No. 14 Fordham (2-11). The game between the Colonials and Rams will tip off at 2:00 pm on Wednesday on ESPN+ and will be played at the Siegel Center.

Seventh-seeded Dayton (9-7) will play 10-seeded Rhode Island (7-10) at 3:30 pm on Thursday at Siegel Center in the second round, with the winner playing No. 2 VCU Friday at Siegel Center. No. 8 Richmond (6-5) faces No. 9 Duquesne (7-7) at 11:00 am Thursday at Siegel Center for the right to play top-seeded St. Bonaventure in the quarterfinals.

Saint Louis secured the No. 4 seed over UMass, winning a head-to-head tiebreaker based on their regular season finale on Monday.

The winner of the Atlantic 10 Championship will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
