COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: GAME 1, South Carolina 7 UCLA 1; Gamecocks one win from title

compiled from staff, wire, NCAA news, South Carolina news and UCLA news

Blake Cooper has put his South Carolina Gamecocks in position to win their first baseball national championship.

Pitching with three days of rest for the second straight time at the College World Series, Cooper allowed three hits in eight-plus innings and Bobby Haney drove in a career-high three-runs, moving the Gamecocks within a game of the title in NCAA Division I with a 7-1 victory over UCLA on Monday night in Omaha, Nebraska.

Cooper struck out 10 and carried a one-hitter into the ninth inning before running into trouble. The Gamecocks’ fans cheered him wildly as he left the game after throwing 136 pitches and the bases loaded with Bruins. Reliever John Taylor finished, but not before the Bruins broke up the shutout when Cody Regis scored on a double play grounder.

The 53-16 Gamecocks and 51-16 Bruins will play game 2 of the best-of-three finals on Tuesday night.

South Carolina collected 11 of their 14 hits and six runs, four earned, in seven innings against UCLA starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (11-4). Cole surprisingly only had two strikeouts.
