A strange world as Arniel and Noel switched head coaching positions

compiled from staff and wire reports

Former Columbus Blue Jackets interim head coach Claude Noel didn’t have to wait long for another head coaching job.

However, I’m sure he didn’t know he would be replacing the coach that replaced him in Columbus.

It is expected that Noel will be named coach of the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose early next week.

News of the hiring was leaked through several sources on Friday, but most notably was the Winnipeg Free Press newspaper.

Scott Arniel, who was hired by the Columbus Blue Jackets on June 8, was head coach of the Manitoba Moose the past four seasons. Noel was fired by Columbus earlier this week as Arniel wants to bring in his own assistant coaches. However, I would not agree that Noel was fired, because he had said all along after taking the interim head coaching  job that he would not come back as an assistant no matter who the head coach was.

All of the Blue Jackets assistant coaches fired had one year left on their contracts.

If Noel is hired as Manitoba’s head coach, Columbus will not be responsible for the final year of his contract if his salary with the Moose is equal to or more than what he made as a jackets assistant. If it is less, than the Jackets would have to make up the difference.

Manitoba is the top minor-league affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.
