Guard has gone to NCAA Tournament three times |
DAYTON – Wright State head men’s basketball coach Clint Sargent has announced the addition of transfer Sam Alamutu to join the Raider program.
Alamutu (pronounced al-uh-moo-too), a 6-5 guard from Ajax, Ontario, joins the Raiders after spending his first four seasons at Vermont, going to three NCAA Tournaments in that time – 2022 (redshirt), 2023 and 2024.
“Sam impacts winning in a number of areas,” Sargent said. “A high-level competitor that plays with emotion and physicality, he is one of the better rebounding guards in the country and will immediately make us a better defensively. He’s also a great passer and someone we know can develop in our system as scorer and playmaker.”
Alamutu played in all 33 of Vermont’s games in 2024-25, starting 19 contests, as he averaged 17.3 minutes per game with a 5.6 points per game mark. He shot 46.9 percent last season overall while he was active on the glass as well, averaging 6.5 boards per contest. Alamutu notched a season-best 16 points in March against Albany, one of six games last season that saw him tally 10-plus points. He collected five or more points in 14 games, while he finished his final six games of the year strong with three of his double-digit scoring efforts and eight-plus points in all six contests. Alamutu played in 35 games in 2023-24, shooting 58.2 percent for the season with a career-best 23 points at New Hampshire in March, one of his 11 games with five-plus points scored. He saw action in 24 games in 2022-23 as a redshirt freshman, notching a season-high 12 points against Northern Vermont-Lyndon.
On the glass, Alamutu grabbed a career-best 21 rebounds in March against Maine, one of seven double-digit rebounding efforts in 2024-25 as he collected five or more boards in 23 games last season. Alamutu has played in 92 games in his career, grabbing five-plus rebounds in 42 total contests.
After being a part of Vermont’s 2022 NCAA squad as a redshirt, Alamutu saw his first NCAA action against second-seed Marquette in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, hitting his only shot from the floor. He then played 22 minutes and finished with a team-best seven rebounds in Vermont’s 2024 NCAA Tournament contest against No. 4-seed Duke. Alamutu was a part of three America East regular season championships and three tournament title teams overall at Vermont.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Alamutu played three prep seasons with Rothesay Netherwood School in New Brunswick, Canada, being named a captain and team MVP as senior. He was named to the All-National Preparatory Association (NPA) first team as a junior and was the Male Athlete of the Year the same season, while he averaged 18 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a junior prior to the COVID shutdown. Off the court, Alamutu earned a leadership award and graduated with distinction from Rothesay Netherwood School.
Alamutu becomes the third transfer addition to the Wright State roster, joining the signings of Bryan Etumnu and Dominic Pangonis.
