INDIANAPOLIS – Winners of its last 11 games, the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program will make its first appearance in the NCAA Final Four since 1984 when it faces No. 3/3 (1) Baylor at 4:14 p.m. (CDT) Saturday, inside Lucas Oil Stadium on Unity Court.
The sixth-ranked Cougars earned the sixth trip to the NCAA Final Four after taking a 67-61 win over (12) Oregon State on March 29 inside Lucas Oil Stadium. With that, Houston became the 15th team in NCAA history to earn 6+ trips to the Final Four.
Against Oregon State, sophomore guard Marcus Sasser poured in game highs with 20 points and five 3-pointers with two assists and two steals to lead the Cougars to the win. Junior All-American guard Quentin Grimes posted 18 points with four 3-pointers and added four rebounds and a pair of steals, while senior guard DeJon Jarreau flirted with a triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds eight assist and a pair of steals.
For their impressive performances, Jarreau was named the Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player, while Grimes earned a place on the Regional All-Tournament Team.
This season, Grimes leads the Cougars and ranks third in The American with 18.0 points per game. The Woodlands, Texas, native became the first Cougar to be named to one of the first three All-America teams since 1984 and became only the fourth player in school history to be named a conference and conference tournament Most Outstanding Player.
Sasser stands second on the team with 13.5 points per game and earned All-Conference honors for the first time in his career earlier this season, while Jarreau ranks third with 10.8 points per game and leads Houston with 4.4 assists per game.
With a team-high 132 assists in 2020-21, Jarreau became only eighth player in school history to record three 100+ assists seasons during his Cougar career.
Senior forward Justin Gorham leads the Cougars and The American with 8.7 rebounds per game and stands seventh in the nation with 3.9 offensive boards per contest. The Columbia, Md., native joined Grimes, Sasser and Jarrea on the All-Conference team.
