HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – No. 1 Liberty hoisted the CUSA Basketball Championship trophy for the first time in program history after defeating No. 2 Jax State, 79-65, in Saturday’s title showdown.
Redshirt senior guard Kaden Metheny, the CUSA Men’s Basketball Championship Most Valuable Player, scored a game-high 21 points on 5-10 shooting from beyond the arc. All-Tournament selection Taelon Peter was a perfect 7-7 from the field and 3-3 from deep as he finished with 20 points. Colin Porter piled on 13 points and tied the CUSA championship game record with nine assists.
The Flames shot 60.0 percent from the floor as a team, marking the highest clip ever in a CUSA title game. Their 12 three-pointers ties the CUSA championship game record as Houston reached this mark in 2010.
Liberty secures CUSA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and awaits their first-round opponent, which will be announced tomorrow on the Selection Sunday show at 5 p.m. CT on CBS.
