The Boilermakers dropped a 74-61 decision against Minnesota at Mackey Arena on Wednesday night. Purdue trimmed a double-digit deficit down to three midway through the fourth, but the Golden Gophers pulled away with a late run. Sophie Swanson led Purdue with 18 points, while Kendall Puryear chipped in with 16 points. Rashunda Jones narrowly missed her first career double-double with 14 points and nine assists.
NOTES
• Ohio State leads the all-time series with Purdue 49-32. Purdue is 10-24 when facing the Buckeyes in Columbus.
• The Boilermakers return to Value City Arena for the first time since knocking off No. 2 Ohio State 73-65 on Jan. 29, 2023, for the first true road win over an AP Top-5 team in program history.
• Purdue’s underclassmen continued their growing production against Minnesota, scoring 54 of the team’s 61 points. On the year, the Boilermakers’ young group has accounted for 57% of the scoring with that number jumping up to 72% over the last eight games.
• Rashunda Jones dished out a career-high nine assists against Minnesota. The sophomore is up to 94 helpers on the year, ranking 12th on Purdue’s sophomore season assist chart.
• Jones is ninth in the Big Ten with 3.9 assists per league game. Her 3.6 dimes per game are eighth most by a Purdue sophomore.
• Jones’ scoring has ticked up in recent games with double figures in five of her last six outings. After averaging 6.7 points per game in non-conference action, Jones leads Purdue with 10.5 points per night in league play.
• Jones has gone 29-of-30 at the line over Purdue’s last six games.
• Sophie Swanson has emerged as one of Purdue’s most potent threats on offense with a team-high 14.2 points per game on 40% shooting over her last six appearances.
• Swanson returned to the starting lineup against Minnesota to drop a season-high 18 points. The sophomore is averaging a team-best 11 points, as well as 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals in her seven starts this season.
• Kendall Puryear has made her case for All-Big Ten Freshman Team with 9.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per league game. The Lee’s Summit, Mo., native is one of seven Big Ten freshmen averaging over 9.0 points and 3.5 boards per game in league action.
• Puryear has scoring in double figures in eight of her last nine games, averaging 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 61.5% from the field over that stretch.
• Fighting through illness and injury over the last two weeks, McKenna Layden has continued to make her impact on the glass. The sophomore leads the team in Big Ten play with 5.6 rebounds per night, including a career-high 10 at Indiana.
• Purdue is one of 14 teams nationally and one of three from a major conference with two freshmen averaging better than 6.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in Puryear and fellow post Lana McCarthy (6.0 PPG, 4.7 RPG).
• Purdue’s underclassmen are averaging a combined 39.1 points per game in Big Ten play this season, third in the league behind USC (48.3) and Michigan (44.6).
• The Boilermakers have the third hardest NET strength of schedule in the country, behind South Carolina and Texas.
• Sunday will mark Purdue’s 10th game against a ranked opponent, the most by a Big Ten team this season and third most nationally.
• Purdue will face its sixth top-10 foe, the most by a Boilermaker team since Katie Gearlds freshman year in 2003-04.
