Columbus Fury drops to 0-3 after Five Set loss to Expansion Indy Ignite

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Fury (0-3) fell to the Indy Ignite (3-0) 3-2 (18-25, 30-32, 25-19, 25-22, 11-15) in five sets on Saturday evening in their second consecutive five set match. Rookies Kaylee Cox and Raina Terry led the way for the Fury. Terry scored 24 points from a team-high 23 kills hitting .327 for the match. Cox added 19 points from 15 kills and a team-high five blocks and 15 digs alongside Jill Gillen. Wilma Rivera had 51 assists.

SET ONE

Indianapolis opened the set with a 6-4 lead. The Ignite maintained a two point advantage for a series of scores before a 3-0 run saw them go ahead 16-11. The Ignite pushed the lead to five a 20-15 and powered their way to a 25-18 set victory.

SET TWO

The second started neck-and-neck between the two clubs at 6-6. Columbus pushed themselves out to a 12-10 lead before Indy tied the game at 12-12. Columbus enjoyed a 4-0 run pushing their lead to 17-13. Columbus led 19-15 before suffering another Ignite rally to cut the lead to 20-17. The Ignite tied the set at 20-20 via another 3-0 run. Columbus led 24-21 and was on the brink of winning their third consecutive second set, but another rally from the Ignite saw the set tied for the third time at 24-24. Columbus sat on six opportunities to win the set point as they traded blows with the Ignite, but it was the newcomers who had the final blow eventually winning the set 32-30.

SET THREE

Indy kept a slight advantage on the hosts through the first part of the set but the Fury stuck with them tying the set at 8-8. Columbus went on a 3-0 run to take the lead for the first time at 11-8. After taking the lead, Columbus never looked back, pushing the advantage to 16-11, the biggest lead of the set. The Fury took the third set 25-19.

SET FOUR

Columbus opened with a 5-1 run and pushed the lead to 11-6. The Fury had a seven-point lead later in the set, at 17-10. Indy rallied back, getting within one at 18-17, but the Fury fended off the comeback, winning the set 25-22 to tie the match at two apiece and force a fifth set.

SET FIVE

The Fury were down 5-3 to open the final set but pushed back to tie at 6-6. A 5-0 scoring run saw the Ignite go up 11-6 before finishing the set and match at 15-11 for their third straight win.

The Columbus Fury return home to Nationwide Arena on Friday, January 24 to face the Omaha Supernovas (2-1) at 7 p.m. ET.
