COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes will get their first look at one of the Big Ten’s newest members when they host the Oregon Ducks on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised on BTN. Kevin Kugler and Stephen Bardo will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Neil Sika and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- This will be just the fifth all-time meeting between the two programs and the first since 1992.
- The Buckeyes lead the short series 3-1 and have won the last three meetings.
- The schools played in the first NCAA Championship game in 1939 when the Oregon Webfoots claimed the title with a 46-33 victory. The Buckeyes won home games in 1945 and 1971 and then Ohio State won the Far West Classic in Portland, Ore., with a 79-75 victory in 1992.
- There won’t be any basketball “How-To” videos made from Ohio State’s game at Minnesota last Monday night. Following the 89-88 double-overtime victory, the Buckeyes quickly grabbed their things and sprinted out of Williams Arena with the win, not because it was already past midnight back home, but they were worried Minnesota might ask for it back. Nonetheless, road Big Ten wins are extremely valuable and no one is apologizing because that was just the third conference road victory for the Buckeyes since New Year’s Day 2023.
- Sophomore Devin Royal continued his strong season as he led the Buckeyes with 19 points in the win at Minnesota. His dunk with five seconds left in regulation was as clutch as they come, as it tied the game and sent it to overtime. Royal has five games this season with at least 18 points and five rebounds.
- Freshman guard John Mobley Jr.’s poise down the stretch was another thing that stood out Monday night. He made a great left-handed pass to setup Royal for the game-tying dunk and then he himself tied the game at the end of the first overtime with a pair of clutch free throws. He finished the night with 12 points, four assists and no turnovers. The Reynoldsburg, Ohio native has started the last five games and he has 17 assists and just three turnovers in those games.
- Ques Glover and Aaron Bradshaw combined for 20 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists Monday at Minnesota. Glover made all four of his free throws in the second OT and Bradshaw had a key three-point play at the start of the second extra session. This is the third consecutive game they have mentioned on the front page of the notes, but the main point still applies — the Buckeyes are different with those two in the lineup.
- Oregon got off to a great start to the season, winning its first nine games. That run included wins over Texas A&M and Alabama. But since, the Ducks have gone 4-2 with home losses to UCLA and Illinois. Nate Bittle leads the team at 13.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
