This is the first back-to-back 100-point games since 1990
COLUMBUS, Ohio. – Seven Buckeyes were in double figures as Ohio State continued to roll in a 102-69 victory over Green Bay on Monday night inside Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes improve to 5-1 on the season and win the Ohio State MTE which also featured Evansville and Campbell.
Coupled with Friday’s 104-60 win over Campbell, this is the first back-to-back 100-point games for the Buckeyes since their hit the mark in each of the first four games of the 1990-91 season.
This was also the first time that seven Buckeyes reached double-figures in the same game in exactly 34 years. Ohio State beat Bethune-Cookman 111-72 on Nov. 25, 1990, as Jim Jackson led seven Buckeyes with 19 points and seven assists.
On Monday, junior point guard Bruce Thornton one-upped Jackson as he led Ohio State with 25 points and nine assists. He was 7-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-7 from long range. He notched his 1,000th career point in the game as well.
Meechie Johnson Jr. also made five three-pointers to finish with 17 points. Freshman John Mobley Jr. came off the bench and heated up quickly, finishing with 14 points on 3-of-5 from long range.
Sean Stewart returned to the lineup and had 11 points and eight rebounds while Evan Mahaffey and Micah Parrish each chipped-in with 10 points. Sophomore Devin Royal notched his second double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Buckeyes shot 66.7 percent in the second half to break-open a seven-point game with 12:30 to play and turn it into a comfortable win.
The nation’s leading scorer Anthony Roy made eight three-pointers and finished with 30 points to lead the Green Bay. But the next highest scorer for the Phoenix had just eight points.
Ohio State would lead wire-to-wire in game. An 8-1 run late in the opening half gave the Buckeyes a 14-point lead and then would lead 42-32 at the break. Green Bay hung around and three-pointer with 15:00 minutes to play cut the lead to six at 53-47.
But over the final 12:20, the Buckeyes would make 15 of their last 20 shots and outscored Green Bay 43-18 down the stretch.
Ohio State forced Green Bay into 18 turnovers and had 20 steals. This was also the fourth time in the first six games that Ohio State made 10 or more three-pointers. They were 14-of-31 for 45.2 percent.
