HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall redshirt junior quarterback Braylon Braxton was named as the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Braxton earned the honor after a banner performance in Marshall’s 52-37 Homecoming win over App State, who was chosen as the preseason as the SBC favorite to win the East Division.
In his first career start for the Thundering Herd, Braxton accounted for 269 yards of total offense and five touchdowns while not turning the ball over as Marshall produced its most points against an FBS opponent in its Sun Belt era and the most since defeating FIU, 52-0, in 2015.
Braxton completed eight of his final 11 passes of the game, which included three touchdown passes of 75, 26 and 5 yards to three separate receivers.
The Frisco, Texas native also had 140 yards rushing and added touchdown runs of 36 and 3 yards.
His 140-yard rushing performance ranks No. 6 all-time among single-game rushing performances by a Marshall quarterback.
Braxton also kept the Herd offense moving consistently as Marshall gained 21 first downs in only 53 offensive plays – an average of a first down every 2.5 plays.
In addition to earning the Sun Belt’s Offensive Player of the Week award, Braxton also was highlighted on ESPN, earning a “Helmet Sticker” from the studio crew for his electric performance.
It was the second straight week that a Marshall player has won an SBC Player of the Week award as Braxton joined J.J. Roberts, who earned the Defensive Player of the Week award in the previous week.
Marshall is now 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play heading into Saturday’s nationally-televised 8 p.m. matchup against Georgia Southern. The battle to maintain first place in the Sun Belt East Division will be shown on ESPNU.
The Herd’s next home game will also be a nationally-televised contest as the Herd hits prime-time for a Thursday night ESPN2 matchup against Georgia State on Oct. 17. Tickets for that 7 p.m. matchup at Joan C. Edwards Stadium are on sale HERE.
