2023-24 NBA AWARDS: 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey named Kia NBA Most Improved Player

Philadelphia’s All-Star guard, Tyrese Maxey on Tuesday night was named the league’s most improved this season. Maxey’s scoring rose for the third consecutive year, and he finished the regular season averaging 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game with all being career bests.

Maxey edged out Chicago’s Coby White in the voting. Houston’s Alperen Sengun was third. White averaged 19.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, also all career highs. Sengun averaged 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.5 minutes per game, another player with career highs.

On November 12, 2023, Maxey put up a then career-high 50 points along with seven rebounds, five assists, and three blocks in a 137–126 win over the Indiana Pacers. He became the sixth Sixer ever with 50+ points, 5+ rebounds and 5+ assists (Allen IversonJoel EmbiidWilt ChamberlainHal Greer and Dana Barros). Maxey also joined Iverson as the only Sixers with 50+ points at 23 or younger. He also dedicated his career-high to his teammate Kelly Oubre Jr., who was struck by a car by a hit and run driver and went to the hospital the previous day. On December 29, Maxey scored 42 points in a 131–127 win over the Houston Rockets.

On February 1, 2024, Maxey was named to his first career All-Star Game as an Eastern Conference reserve. On the same day, Maxey scored a then career-high 51 points in a 127–124 win over the Utah Jazz. On April 7, Maxey scored a career-high 52 points in a 133–126 double–overtime win over the San Antonio Spurs. Maxey finished his 4th season with the 76ers averaging 25.9 points per game and 6.2 assists per game.
