MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 4/4 Ohio State Buckeyes (25-5, 16-2 B1G) fell to eighth-seeded Maryland (19-12, 9-9 B1G) by an 82-61 margin on Friday afternoon in the Big Ten quarterfinals.

Maryland had a strong start, but Ohio State responded with an 8-0 run midway through the first quarter to propel the Buckeyes to a 17-12 advantage after 10 minutes. The Terrapins used an 11-0 run in the second quarter to build a 38-30 halftime lead. After being down by as many as 19 in the third quarter, the Buckeyes trailed 65-52 after 30 minutes. Maryland had the edge in the fourth quarter and earned the 82-61 win.

Rebeka Mikulášiková was the first Buckeye to reach double figures and finished with 16 points. Jacy Sheldon (10), Taylor Thierry (13) and Cotie McMahon (12) joined Mikulášiková in double figures. McMahon was one rebound shy of a double-double, while Celeste Taylor led the team with six assists.

How it Happened
Maryland started quickly, building an 8-3 lead with 6:28 to play in the opening quarter. Ohio State responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead and led by an 11-10 margin at the media timeout. The Buckeyes scored five-unanswered points on their way to a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes.

The Terrapins opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to take the 21-19 lead with 6:27 to play before halftime, prompting a Buckeye timeout. Maryland extended its run to 11-0 and its lead to 26-19 with 5:32 remaining in the second quarter. The Terrapins led by as many as nine and held the 38-30 advantage at halftime after a buzzer beater.

After a quarter-opening jumper from Maryland, Ohio State responded with an extended 9-2 run to get within three at 42-39 with under seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Terrapins scored the next nine points to extend their lead to 51-39 and force a Buckeye timeout with four minutes to play in the third. Ohio State trailed by as many as 19 at 63-44 and trailed 65-52 at the end of the third quarter.

The Buckeyes opened scoring in the fourth but the Terrapins put together runs of six and five-unanswered points to extend their lead to 76-56 with under four minutes to play. Scoring wrapped up at 82-61 with a Maryland jumper.

  • Jacy Sheldon reached double figures for the 27th time this season and totaled 10 points.
  • Taylor Thierry recorded her 21st double-figure performance of the season with 13 points.
  • Cotie McMahon’s 24th double-figure game of the season was good for 12 points. She led the team with nine rebounds.
  • Q1: Ohio State’s defense forced six turnovers and recorded four steals in the first quarter.
