COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will try to find the right formula on the road this weekend when it heads to East Lansing to take on Michigan State on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on CBS. Brad Nessler and Jay Wright will call the action.
- After meeting three times last season, Sunday’s game will be the lone scheduled game this season between the two teams. Overall, this will be the 143rd all-time meeting and the Spartans officially own the all-time series lead at 75-60 after taking into account vacated games.
- The Buckeyes have lost their last nine games at Michigan State with the last win coming on March 4, 2012. William Buford hit a jumper with one second remaining to give the Buckeyes a 72-70 victory, a share of the Big Ten title and spoiled MSU’s senior day.
- Michigan State won both regular season games last year and then the Buckeyes got their revenge in the Big Ten Tournament, beating the Spartans in the quarterfinals. In the first meeting on Super Bowl Sunday, Michigan State rolled to a 62-41 victory. No more needs to be said about that game. The second meeting, on Senior Day at Michigan State, was a much closer game. MSU used a 15-0 run early to build a 17-4 lead, but the young Buckeyes showed a lot of heart, fighting all the way back to a one possession game late in the game. The Spartans gained composure and pulled out an 84-78 victory. In the third meeting, the Buckeyes used the momentum from its previous two wins in the tournament to beat MSU 68-58.
- The Buckeyes are coming off an 88-79 loss at Minnesota on Thursday evening. Bruce Thornton scored 23 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and also had six assists and zero turnovers. Jamison Battle was 5-of-10 from long range and finished with 21 points in his return to Minneapolis. The Buckeyes shot 50 percent in the game, which was just the second time they had done that since the start of December, but they also allowed a season-high 88 points.
- In addition to Battle having a nice night back home, freshman Taison Chatman enjoyed a nice moment in front of friends and family in Minneapolis. Chatman scored his first collegiate points in the game at Minnesota, knocking-down a runner in the first half. Chatman’s season was slowed a bit at the start by a knee issue, but he has started to pick it up as of late.
- Thornton is one of four players in the country this season with 100+ assists and fewer than 30 turnovers. He leads the Big Ten with a 3.97 assist-to-turnover ratio.
- The Buckeyes are looking for their first win in a true road game since beating Northwestern 73-57 on Jan. 1, 2023.
- Michigan State is coming off a 78-71 setback at home to Iowa on Tuesday, which stopped a modest three-game winning streak. The Spartans lead the league in fast break points and have the third-best scoring defense in the league. Tyson Walker is the catalyst for those fast break points and he leads the team in scoring at 18.3 ppg.
