DAYTON – A fourth quarter push lifted the Wright State women’s basketball team to a 70-66 home victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon, moving the Raiders into third place in the Horizon League standings.
Tied at 52 heading into the fourth quarter, Wright State (15-11, 9-6 Horizon) tallied 10 of the first 12 points in the final 10 minutes, going 4-of-7 in the three-minute stretch with a pair of three-pointers while forcing Purdue Fort Wayne (15-10, 8-6 Horizon) into three turnovers during the run. The Raiders pushed the lead to 62-54 with 6:46 to play, holding off a final Purdue Fort Wayne push as Wright State was 5-of-6 from the free throw line to close the win.
Alexis Hutchison scored 14 of her team-leading 22 points in the second half as she shot 50 percent from the floor and added six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists, while Rachel Loobie tallied the afternoon’s lone double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds – notching six points and five rebounds in the fourth quarter while adding a 6-of-6 mark at the free throw line.
Kacee Baumhower added 13 points of her own and Layne Ferrell had 11 points as each connected on a trio of three pointers, while Lauren Scott and Claire Henson both finished with six points as Henson pulled down six rebounds.
Wright State shot 42 percent overall (24-of-57) while connecting on 10 three-pointers, the 10th time this season the Raiders have hit double-digit three-pointers. The Raiders were 12-of-13 (92 percent) at the free throw line, while they ended the win with a 41-38 rebounding edge with 33 boards off the defensive glass. Purdue Fort Wayne shot 32 percent (20-of-62) and was 31 percent (9-of-29) from three-point range while going 17-of-24 (71 percent) at the free throw stripe.
Shayla Sellers logged a game-high 23 points to lead three Purdue Fort Wayne players in double digits in the loss.
