Pittsburgh’s Ke’Bryan Hayes was named the winner of the 2023 Rawlings Gold Glove Award for National League third basemen.

The 26-year-old Hayes led all third basemen in MLB this season with 21 Defensive Runs Saved according to both the Fielding Bible and FanGraphs (the next closest player according to both outlets was Colorado’s Ryan McMahon with 17 Defensive Runs Saved).

Hayes also ranked fourth in Defensive Runs Saved (21) regardless of position according to the Fielding Bible in 2023, trailing only Daulton Varsho (29), Fernando Tatis Jr. (27) and Andres Gimenez (23).

Hayes also led all all third basemen according to Baseball Savant in both Fielding Run Value (13) and Outs Above Average (17). Hayes is the first Pirates third baseman to take home a Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Since 2020 when he broke into the big leagues, Hayes ranks first among all third basemen in MLB with 65 Defensive Runs Saved according to the Fielding Bible (the next closest player is Ryan McMahon with 43).

A total of 20 different Pirates have now taken home a Rawlings Gold Glove since the award was first presented in 1958. Prior to Hayes, the last Pirate to earn a Rawlings Gold Glove was catcher Jacob Stallings in 2021.
