Wright State Men’s Basketball set for Sunday meeting with Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, IN – The Wright State men’s basketball team looks to bounce back with a victory at Purdue Fort Wayne on the road Sunday afternoon, as the Raiders tipoff against the Mastodons at 2 p.m. inside the Gates Sports Center. Despite Friday’s loss, the Raiders have won five of their last seven games while Purdue Fort Wayne is on a three-game losing streak. 

Fans can follow the action several ways – via live stats, by watching on ESPN+ or by tuning in on WONE 980 AM. Chris Collins and Jim Brown will have all the play-by-play on the radio feeds.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State saw three players finish in double figures on Friday night but it was not enough, as the Raiders fell 85-68 in Horizon League action. The Raiders were led by Trey Calvin’s game-high 25 points, while Andrew Welage added 14 points off the bench and Brandon Noel tallied 10 points and a team-best six rebounds. Calvin scored 14 of his 25 points in the opening half on his way to a 10-of-19 shooting night and his 15th game with 20-plus points this season, while both his four made three-pointers and five steals Friday night tied a career-best. Welage connected on four three-pointers of his own as part of his eighth double-digit performance of the year,

FORT WAYNE FACTS
Purdue Fort Wayne enters Sunday at 15-13 overall with a 7-10 HL record. The Mastodons are coming off a Friday home loss to Northern Kentucky and have now lost four straight. Wright State’s comeback push in the first meeting back in mid-January fell short as Purdue Fort Wayne grabbed an 88-80 win in the Nutter Center back on Jan. 19. Trey Calvin’s 26 points led all scorers, while Alex Huibregtse and Andrew Welage each had 10 points off the bench and Brandon Noel finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds Wright State leads the short series 11-4, with nine of the 13 matchups coming back during the 1980’s. The Raiders have won 10 of the last 12 in the series overall.

DETAILS ON THE ‘DONS
-Purdue Fort Wayne is 15-13 overall with a 7-10 Horizon League record. The Mastodons are 8-6 at home to date but have lost five of their last six home games overall and are 3-6 at home in Horizon League action with wins coming over Oakland (OT), Green Bay and IUPUI.
-Now their part-time home, Purdue Fort Wayne is 4-1 in home games played the on-campus Gates Sports Center over the last two seasons. The Mastodons played all home games at the Gates Sports Center in 2020-21 as COVID precautions barred fans from attending games, going 5-6 at home in that shortened season.

Wright State has played inside the Gates Sports Center three times previously, going 2-1 in the three 1980’s matchups – Jan. 3, 1984 (loss), Nov. 23, 1985 (win) and Feb. 25, 1987 (win). The Gates Sports Center is named after Hilliard Gates, widely regarded as the founding father of Indiana sports broadcasting and the leading sportscaster in Indiana for decades.

Wright State’s 50.0 overall season shooting percentage to date is 4th best in the country behind Gonzaga (1, 52.3 percent), Colgate (2, 50.8) and Xavier (3, 50.1). Trey Calvin’s 433 total field goal attempts is No. 7 nationally and his 213 field goals made is ranked 9th, while Brandon Noel’s 60.9 percent field goal percentage is tops in the Horizon League and is No. 22 nationally in shooting percentage.
