Dayton Flyers hold off Davidson for season’s sweep; Anthony Grant rips gamblers threatening him and his players following last week’s loss to VCU

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men’s basketball team won against their rival Davidson Wildcats on Tuesday night after trailing at halftime. The Flyers bounced back by winning at home with a score of 68-61.

Mustapha Amzil led the Flyers with 19 points, Toumani Camara had 15 points, and Mike Sharavjamts had seven assists.   

Dayton improved its record to 13-6 (5-1 in A-10), while Davidson fell to 9-10 (2-5 in A-10).

First Half — Dayton 29 , Davidson 32

  • Toumani Camara starts the scoring for Dayton hitting a post shot for two. 
  • The Flyers took a 6-3 lead after a basket from DaRon Holmes II and a technical foul on the Davidson bench.
  • Malachi Smith returned to the lineup after missing 10 games with an ankle injury with 15:57 remaining in the half.
  • Camara snapped a 3:40 scoring drought for the Flyers with a post lay-up.
  • Mustapha Amzil hit the first three-pointer of the night for Dayton, assisted by Smith, to pull UD to within one (12-11) with 12:52 left in the half.
  • Mike Sharavjamts made a steal and passed the ball up to Camara who got the assist to R.J. Blakney for a huge fast break dunk to reclaim the lead, 24-23 for Dayton with 4:44 left before halftime.
  • Sharavjamts knocked down a three to tie the game at 29 with 1:05 to go, but Davidson answered with a three to go into the locker room leading 32-29.

Second Half — Dayton 68, Davidson 61

  • Amzil  got the scoring in the second half underway with a baseline hook shot on the first possession.
  • Davidson answered with a bucket of its own, but Dayton went on a 13-0 run in the next 3:12 to lead 44-34 with 15:23 left in the game.
  • UD took the lead for good at 18:13 when Blakney came up with a steal and finished it off on the other end with a slam dunk.
  • Smith got his first points after being out for the 10 games on a floater, extending the Flyer lead to eight (46-38) with 12:06 to go.
  • The Wildcats pulled to within four (56-52) with 4:51 left, but a three by Koby Brea and three free throws by Amzil pushed the advantage back out to 10 two minutes later.
  • Davidson brought the Dayton lead down to five three times in the last two minutes, but free throws by Camara, Smith and Amzil clinched the UD win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Mustapha Amzil led the scoring with 19 points (5-8 FG, 2-3 3- pt., 7-8 FT).  Following the charge was Toumani Camara with 15 points
  • The Flyers out-blocked the Wildcats 10-0.  Camara led with three.
  • Four Flyers had a team-high five rebounds — Camara, DaRon Holmes IIR.J. Blakney and Mike Sharavjamts.
  • Sharavjamts had seven assists with no turnovers, 
  • Malachi Smith returned to the lineup with five points and five assists (one turnover) in 16 minutes of action.
  • Mike Sharavjamts led the team in assists with 7. He also contributed to the defensive effort with a block and two steals. 
  • Dayton shot 64% from the field in the second half, leading to 54% from the field for game, along with 43% from the past arch.

  • Dayton heads to Washington, D.C to take on GW on Saturday, Jan. 21.  Game time is 12:30 p.m. ET.
  • After playing at Rhode Island on Wednesday, Jan. 25, the Flyers are back home on Saturday, Jan. 28 against Richmond.
