Cortland, NY – The Wittenberg Tiger football team fell in their season opener to the Red Dragons of SUNY-Cortland, 48-28 from the road. The Tiger football team trailed 24-7 at the half, Wittenberg was able to find their footing down the stretch before falling short. The Tigers tallied 356 total yards of offense, striking for most of their gains through the air and picking up 259 yards. Junior quarterback Collin Brown completed 18 of 28 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.
Brown would find three different receivers for Tiger touchdowns on the day. The first Wittenberg score came midway through the first quarter as Tyler May reeled in a 48-yard pass for the first Tiger touchdown of the season. Jake Saus stopped the SUNY-Cortland scoring run with a 20-yard touchdown run, capping off a five play 53-yard Wittenberg scoring drive to make it a 31-14 game. Garrett Gross put the first points of the fourth-quarter on the board with a 30-yard catch and run, making it a 41-21 game. Brysen Dykes pulled down the final Wittenberg touchdown with a six-yard reception from Brown, capping of the seven play 37-yard drive.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
- Cameron Snurr led the Tiger defense with 13 tackles, nine assisted and four solo.
- Max Yost tallied eight solo takedowns with nine total tackles, including two tackles for a loss.
- Three Tigers logged five tackles on the day, including Christian Sweet, Luke Jackson and Conner Walls.
