NEW YORK (May 14, 2025) – National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman today released the following statement regarding the passing of Dennis Cunningham:

“The National Hockey League family mourns the passing of Dennis Cunningham, who served the League with distinction and unwavering commitment for 28 years, from 1993 to 2021, as Executive Vice President of Security. One of my first hires when I became Commissioner, Dennis worked tirelessly behind the scenes and with no fanfare to provide a safe environment for our fans, our teams and our Players.

“A native New Yorker, prior to joining the NHL, he provided 27 years of dedicated service to his city with the New York Police Department. The National Hockey League extends its deepest sympathies to his wife, Brigitta, and his entire family.”
