The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that Chris Truby and Gene Lamont have joined the Major League coaching staff. The announcement was made by Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington and Manager Don Kelly.
Truby, whose role will be as a coach on the Major League staff, began this year as Triple-A Indianapolis’ manager, while also serving as the organization’s minor league infield coordinator for the fourth year. Truby, who will work with Pittsburgh’s infielders, played four seasons in the Majors with Houston (2000-01), Montreal (2002), Detroit (2002) and Tampa Bay (2003).
Lamont, who will serve as a special advisor to Kelly, returns to the Pirates for his third stint with the organization. He was the team’s manager from 1997-2000 (coach in 1996), while also serving as a coach from 1986-91. Lamont was a coach in Detroit under managers Jim Leyland (2006-13) and Brad Ausmus (2014-17).
Mike Rabelo, who will continue to coach third base, will expand his role on the bench for Kelly, having increased responsibilities in game planning and in-game strategy.
Truby, who will wear uniform No. 44, will join the team today in Philadelphia. Lamont, who will wear uniform No. 54, will join the team at the beginning of next week’s homestand.
Shawn Bowman, who began the 2025 season as the organization’s assistant director, coaching and player development/minor league field coordinator, will take over as Indianapolis’ manager.
