Ohio State News: Buckeyes Drop Series Finale at Northwestern

The Buckeyes close out the 2025 season with four games at Bill Davis Stadium this week

 

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Ohio State baseball team (12-35, 4-23 Big Ten) dropped its series finale to Northwestern (23-25, 12-15 Big Ten), 17-2, in seven innings on Sunday to close out its road schedule.

 

Game Recap

  • Northwestern took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after a bases-clearing triple.
  • The Wildcats got seven across in the bottom of the second on an RBI single, a two-RBI double, two bases-loaded walks and a two-RBI double to take a 10-0 lead over the Buckeyes.
  • Will Carpenter had the first hit of the day for the Buckeyes with a stand-up double in the top of the third inning. Sal Mineo followed that with a single to right field. Trey Lipsey was next up and he doubled down the left field line, scoring Carpenter to put the Buckeyes on the board. Mineo scored on a groundout from Matthew Graveline to bring Ohio State within eight runs of the Wildcats, 10-2.
  • Northwestern added to its lead, 13-2, with a solo home run and two-run home run in the bottom of the third frame.
  • A three-run home run for the Wildcats in the bottom of the fifth inning gave them a 14-run lead, 16-2.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth, Mason Eckelman sent a single into right field, but there was nothing else doing for the Buckeyes in the inning.
  • Another home run for the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth put them ahead by 15, 17-2.
  • Maddix Simpson walked to lead off the top of the seventh for the Buckeyes. With one out, Carpenter singled to left field, but the next two Ohio State batters were retired and Northwestern earned the 17-2 win.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

  • Carpenter led the Buckeyes with two hits.
  • Lipsey and Graveline each had one RBI.
  • Jake Michalak (1-6) took the loss. He gave up eight runs on three hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
  • Nik Copenhaver struck out a career-high five in 3.1 relief innings. He gave up seven runs on five hits.

Up Next

  • The Buckeyes close out the 2025 season this week, hosting Butler on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. and welcoming Illinois for a three-game series Thursday, May 15-Sunday, May 17. The Buckeyes will celebrate senior day prior to the start of Saturday’s game.
