Gritty, confident Blue Jackets shake off 3-0, 5-3 deficits to defeat Vancouver 7-6 in Shootout; back in tie for Second Wildcard with 75 points: Game 71 Recap

BLUE JACKETS TEAM NOTES

  • Columbus (1-1-0) finished the season series against Vancouver (1-0-1) following tonight’s shootout win.
  • The teams have split nine of the 11 series since moving to a home-and-home series in 2013-14.
  • The home team has now won the last eight-straight meetings dating back to Nov. 26, 2021.
  • CBJ have won five-straight meetings between the clubs at Nationwide Arena and improved to 7-3-1 in the past 11 games overall.
  • CBJ improved to 9-4-2 in the last 15 home games in 2024-25.  The team has recorded points in 17 of the past 22 home contests (13-5-4) as well as in 22 of the last 28 played at home (17-6-5).
  • The Jackets won their eighth three-goal comeback win in franchise history and the second of the season (Nov. 21 vs. TBL: 7-6 OT win).
  • The club has recorded 226 goals (not including SO goals) through 71 games this season, tying for the most through 71 games in a single season (2016-17).
  • Columbus has scored goals in 139-of-the-211 periods played in regulation this season with 61 multi-goal frames after scoring three times in the second and third periods.
  • Tonight’s attendance was a sellout crowd of 18,586.  CBJ have had sellout crowds (over 18,144) at seven of last 10 games played at Nationwide Arena since Jan. 25 (18,127 avg.) and 12 sellouts total.

 

BLUE JACKETS PLAYER NOTES 

  • Dante Fabbro (6-13-19, 58 GP) tallied his second career three-point game (w/ NSH: 1-2-3 on Dec. 7, 2021 at DET) with 1-2-3 and has assists in consecutive games (1-3-4).
  • Adam Fantilli (22-22-44, 71 GP) collected an assist and has points in consecutive games (1-1-2).  He has now posted 11-10-21 in his past 24 games this season.
  • Erik Gudbranson (0-1-1, 5 GP) tallied his first point of the season with his 100th career assist (34-100-134, 794 GP).  He also became the 27th skater to record a point this season for the Blue Jackets.
  • LW Boone Jenner (4-10-14, 15 GP) posted his 11th career three-point game, and third multi-point effort of the season, with 2-1-3.  He has recorded goals in three consecutive contests (4-1-5).  He now sits four goals from 200 for his NHL career (196-182-378, 730 GP).
  • RW Kent Johnson (22-24-46, 57 GP) scored the lone goal among both teams in the shootout for his third game-winning shootout goal of the season.  He is 3-of-5 when shooting in the first round of the shootout and leads the team in SO GWGs.
  • RW Kirill Marchenko (27-38-65, 68 GP) posted his 16th multi-point game (1-1-2) of the season and has 2-1-3 in back-to-back games.  He improved his career mark against Vancouver to 4-2-6 in five games played, with points in three-straight contests (2-2-4).
  • Denton Mateychuk (4-5-9, 34 GP) scored and assisted for his second career multi-point effort and has 1-2-3 in his past three contests this season.
  • Sean Monahan (14-30-44, 43 GP) picked up an assist and has collected assists in back-to-back games since returning from injury (0-3-3).  He also has points in his last six-straight contests played (1-10-11).  He improved to 13-16-29 with five multi-point efforts in 47 career games against Vancouver, including assists in three of his last four home contests (0-3-3).
  • RW Mathieu Olivier (17-12-29, 71 GP) scored and assisted for his fifth multi-point game of the season and has now tallied 5-3-8 in his last nine contests.
  • Cole Sillinger (9-21-30, 55 GP) registered an assist in his first game back from Injury (11 games) and is two points shy of tying his career high (12-19-32, 2023-24).
  • Zach Werenski (20-50-70, 70 GP) recorded an assist to become the seventh player in franchise history to record 70 points in a campaign, joining LW Artemi Panarin (2x; 87 in 2018-19, 82 in 2017-18), LW Rick Nash (79 in 2008-09), LW Ray Whitney (76 in 2002-03), LW Johnny Gaudreau (74 in 2022-23), C Nick Foligno (73 in 2014-15) and C Ryan Johansen (71 in 2014-15). He matched Rick Nash (70 GP in 2008-09) for the second-fewest games to 70 points in a season by a Blue Jackets player.  His assist also made him the fifth different Jacket to reach the 50-assist plateau in a season, joining Panarin (2x, 59 in 2018-19, 55 in 2017-18), RW Jakub Voracek (56 in 2021-22), Gaudreau (53 in 2022-23) and Whitney (52 in 2002-03).
