Columbus Fury play well in Indy, but Comeback Falls Short, 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Fury (5-12) fell to the Indy Ignite (10-8) (25-21, 25-16, 28-24 Fury, 26-24 Fury, 15-13) Thursday evening. Three Fury attackers had double-doubles in points and kills. Raina Terry led with 20 points and 18 kills, Izabella Rapacz had 19 points with 17 kills and Kaylee Cox had 17 points with 14 kills. Columbus attacked at a .276 efficiency on the match. Wilma Rivera finished the match with 45 assists and Kate Georgiades had 22 digs.

SET ONE

Both sides traded points to begin the match before Indy pulled ahead at 5-3. Columbus tied the set at 6-6 and continued to trade points before a three point run from Indy put them ahead 11-8. Columbus worked to get back in the set but the Ignite fended off the comeback to take the opening set 25-21.

SET TWO

The hosts gained a 4-2 lead early in the second set and grew their advantage to 10-6. An Indy error and a kill from Raina Terry cut the Ignite lead to two points at 9-11. The Fury could not contain the Ignite offense however as they pushed the lead to 17-13. Five straight points from the Ignite put them ahead 23-14 before closing things out 25-16 to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

SET THREE

Both sides remained tied through the first 10 points. A kill from Terry and an Indy attacking error put the Fury ahead at 7-5 before the Ignite rallied back to tie at 8-8. Indy enjoyed a scoring run of five straight points to go ahead 13-9 before Columbus fought back to tie the set at 13-13. The Fury continued to match the pace of the hosts, remaining tied all the way to the end. Columbus gained the lead at 25-24 but were tied immediately. The Ignite got back in front at 26-25 but two straight blocks from Kaylee Cox and Izabella Rapacz put the Fury back ahead 27-26. A kill from Cox put the set away as the Fury won 28-26.

SET FOUR

The fourth set opened with two Ignite errors to give the Fury a 2-0 advantage. Indy quickly came back to tie things at 2-2. Both sides remained tied at 7-7 before Indy went ahead at 13-9. Indy led 16-11 after a quick run of scoring but saw the Fury cut into their lead, closing it down to within three at 15-18. After two successful challenges and blocks from substitutes Janice Leao and Morgan Lewis, the Fury battled back to tie the set 22-22. A kill from Lewis and an Indy attack error saw the Fury go up 24-22. A kill and an ace from Indy tied things back up at 24-24 before kills from Cox and Lewis saw Columbus come from behind to take the set 26-24.

SET FIVE

Both sides remained deadlocked to begin the set. The hosts jumped out to a 7-5 lead but saw it quickly erased with a Rapacz kill and attack error. Columbus scored four straight to go up 9-5 but Indy fought back to tie the set at 11-11. The hosts scored three straight to go up 13-11 before taking the set 15-13 and match 3-2.
