NEW YORK – Ryan Conwell scored a game-high 38 points in Xavier’s 89-87 BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal loss vs No. 25 Marquette at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.
The Musketeers move to 21-11 on the year, while the Golden Eagles improve to 23-9. The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for Xavier.
The NCAA Selection Show is slated for 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 on CBS.
NOTABLE
- Marquette opened the game on a 6-2 run before Xavier scored eight straight points, taking a four-point lad (10-6) with 16:15 on the clock. The Musketeers never relinquished the lead in the first half and led by as many as 12 points with 1:31 on the clock.
- Marquette’s Kam Jones hit a basket in the closing seconds of the stanza to make it a 10-point game (46-36) at the break. Jones led all scorers with 12 points at intermission.
- Ryan Conwell and Zach Freemantle led the Musketeers in scoring at the half with 11 points each. Xavier hit 55.2 percent (16-for-29) of it shot attempts, while limiting the Golden Eagles to a .371 field-goal percentage (13-for-35).
- Xavier led by as many as 14 points (53-39) with 17:34 left in the second half, but the Golden Eagles battled back to regain the lead, 63-62, with 10:26 left in regulation. The remainder of the game had six lead changes and one tie with neither team leading by more than five points.
- Marquette went 2-for-2 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final 1:16 of the contest to go ahead by five points (89-84) with two seconds left in regulation. Ryan Conwell hit a three pointer as time expired for the final ledger, 89-87.
- Ryan Conwell scored a game and career-high 38 points on 13-for-18 shooting. He was 7-for-11 from behind the arc and added three rebounds and three assists.
- The 38 points are a new Xavier BIG EAST Tournament record. Paul Scruggs previously scored 28 points in 2019 BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals vs Villanova (L, 71-67 in OT).
- The 38 points are the most in a game by a Xavier player since Feb. 3, 2024 at DePaul (Quincy Olivari scored 43 points in a 93-68 win).
- Ryan Conwell has scored 20 or more points in five straight games.
- Zach Freemantle added 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting. The forward added seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.
- Zach Freemantle became only the fourth player in Xavier history to be ranked in the top-10 in both points and rebounds (currently has 1,715 career points and 872 career rebounds).
- Dailyn Swain finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Dante Maddox Jr. recorded seven points and two rebounds. Dayvion McKnight added six points, three rebounds and three assists.
- Xavier finished with a .526 field-goal percentage (30-for-57), the team’s 11th game shooting 50 percent or better from the floor. The Musketeers were also 11-for-23 from behind the arc, the team’s 11th game with 10 or more made three pointers.
- Xavier went 16-for-19 from the foul line.
- Marquette finished with a .485 field-goal percentage (32-for-66) and went 14-for-33 from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles were also 11-for-13 from the foul line.
- Xavier won the battle on the glass, 36-27, and scored one more fastbreak point (11-10) than Marquette. The Musketeers also scored three more second-chance points (8-5).
- Marquette held an 18-2 advantage in points off of turnovers and score two more points in the paint (36-34) than Xavier. Both teams scored 12 bench points.
- All told, the game featured eight lead changes and one tie. Xavier led for nearly 31 minutes of action.
