Murray State Director of Athletics Nico Yantko and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Prohm have agreed that Coach Prohm will no longer lead the men’s basketball program.

Coach Prohm played a pivotal role in leading the Racers into a new era as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference in 2022-23 and finished his second stint with the program with 45 wins.

“We are grateful for everything that Coach Prohm has done for the Murray State men’s basketball team, as both an assistant coach and head coach, and I know all of Racer Nation joins me in thanking Coach Prohm and his wife, Katie, and their four children, along with his staff, for everything they have done for the city of Murray, Murray State University, and our department,” Director of Athletics Nico Yantko said. “He has left an incredible legacy, both on and off the court, and has positively impacted the lives of so many student-athletes, coaches, and staff. I am excited for the future of our men’s basketball team as we begin a national search for the next leader of our historic program.”

Coach Prohm’s run of 104-29 in his first four seasons from 2011-15 included the Racers winning two Ohio Valley Conference regular season titles in 2012 and 2015 and a game in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. His 2011-12 team established the Racers as the final undefeated team in the nation at 23-0 with a top-10 national ranking, while his 2014-15 team went undefeated in the OVC play, won a conference-record 25 consecutive games, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT.

“It has been a tremendous honor to lead this storied program, including its transition into a new era in the Missouri Valley Conference,” Steve Prohm said.  “I am forever grateful for the support that the entire Murray and Murray State community provided to everyone in our program.  Murray State has the best fans in the nation, and I am extremely appreciative to our current and former players and staff for their profound impact on my family and me.”

Coach Prohm was voted OVC Coach of the Year on two different occasions and was named Basketball Times National Coach of the Year in 2012. Under his tutelage, he coached NBA draft selections Isaiah Canaan and Cameron Payne, who combined to win three OVC Player of the Year awards between 2012-15 and each earned All-America honors.

Over his entire head coaching career, he has produced eight NBA draft picks and numerous All-America and All-Conference selections.

Overall, Coach Prohm ended his seven-year Racer career with a 149-81 overall record and an 83-41 record against conference opponents across games in the Ohio Valley Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference.

Coach Prohm has also had an incredible impact on his players off the court, utilizing his mentorship program to connect student-athletes with key members of the local community to form lifelong connections that have led to job opportunities.
