COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State begins its west coast trip on Sunday by visiting Pauley Pavilion to take on UCLA on Bill Walton Day. Tip-off is set for 3:45 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on CBS. Ian Eagle, Bill Raftery and Tiffany Blackmon will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Paul Keels and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- This will be the first conference meeting between the two programs and the 14th meeting overall. The Buckeyes hold a slim 7-6 edge in the all-time series.
- Sunday’s game will be the sixth time Ohio State has played at UCLA and the first since 1971. The Buckeyes have a pair of victories in LA, but those came all the way back in 1936 and 1938.
- The last time in LA to face the Bruins was also the only meeting for Ohio State against Bill Walton. The top-ranked Bruins took down No. 6 Ohio State 79-53 on Dec. 30, 1971, en route to a 30-0 season and national title. Walton had 14 points and 13 rebounds in just 17 minutes. Buckeye Luke Witte had a game-high 19 points and matched Walton with 13 boards.
- Last year, the Buckeyes got 19 points from Roddy Gayle Jr. and 13 points and seven rebounds from Bruce Thornton in a 67-60 victory over UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic in Atlanta.
- The Buckeyes are currently No. 32 in the NET rankings and No. 32 in Kenpom.
- Ohio State picked a bad time to have a bad game. The Buckeyes had an uncharacteristic performance in a 70-49 setback to Northwestern on Thursday night. It was statistically the Buckeyes’ worst shooting night at 32.7 percent. John Mobley Jr. failed to make a three-pointer for the first time all season and Devin Royal also didn’t make a shot from the floor. Just a rough game all around. Fingers-crossed that it was only an anomaly.
- Micah Parrish has been a bright spot for the Buckeyes as he’s showing his veteran experience. Over the last 10 games, he’s averaging 16.4 points and has led the team in scoring five times. Prior to that, he led the team in scoring just one time.
- Bruce Thornton has dished out 31 assists over the last six games and for the year, he’s averaging better than 17 points per game. He’s one of the best point guards in the league and the Buckeyes will lean on him in the stretch run.
- UCLA lost four consecutive game at the start of January and then turned around to win its next seven games. Since that stretch, the Bruins have lost two of three, including a 64-61 setback in their most game on Tuesday vs. Minnesota. The Bruins lead the league and are in the Top 10 in the country in turnover margin and force nearly 16 turnovers per game.
