Ohio State Women’s Basketball wins President’s Day Overtime Thriller against Iowa, 86-78

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9/8 Ohio State women’s basketball team (22-3, 11-3 B1G) beat Iowa (18-8, 8-7 B1G) by an 86-78 margin in overtime in the pink game on Monday afternoon.

Ohio State used a 7-0 run midway through the first quarter to take a 22-12 lead after 10 minutes. The Buckeyes had a slight 12-9 edge in a low-scoring second quarter to take a 34-21 lead into halftime. Iowa used a 23-17 third quarter to cut Ohio State’s lead to 51-44 after three quarters of play. The Hawkeyes battled back to force overtime as the game was tied at 74 at the end of regulation. Ohio State allowed only one basket and four total points in overtime, outscoring Iowa by a 12-4 margin to secure the win.

Jaloni Cambridge was the first in the game to double figures, her 16th game this season with 10 or more points, and finished with a game-high 29 points. Kennedy Cambridge (career-high 16) and Cotie McMahon (25) joined J. Cambridge in double figures.

How it Happened
J. Cambridge opened the game’s scoring with a jumper on the opening possession. The game was tied at five before an extended 9-1 OSU run gave the Buckeyes a 14-6 lead midway through the opening quarter. Scoring alternated down the stretch with Kennedy Cambridge knocking down a pair of three-pointers to give Ohio State a 22-12 lead after 10 minutes.

Both teams started slowly in the second quarter as the Hawkeyes had the only basket in the first two minutes of the frame. J. Cambridge got to the line and Taylor Thierry had a quick steal and score to extend OSU’s lead to 26-14 with 7:38 to play in the quarter. Ohio State scored six of eight points to increase the lead to 32-18 and led by a 34-21 margin at halftime.

Iowa started the third quarter with an 8-3 run to cut its deficit to 37-29 with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Hawkeyes got within five at 40-35 at the media timeout. The Buckeyes were able to extend their lead back to nine at 48-39 with just under a minute to play in the quarter. McMahon completed a three-point play but Iowa scored the final third-quarter points. OSU held a 51-44 lead going into the final quarter.

The Hawkeyes scored first in the fourth quarter and cut their deficit to 53-51 with 7:34 to play. McMahon converted back-to-back layups within 45 seconds to force an Iowa timeout with OSU up 57-51. The Hawkeyes made a second-chance triple out of the timeout but the Buckeyes responded with the next six points on the floor, leading 63-54 with under four minutes remaining. Back-to-back Buckeye baskets gave OSU a 69-57 lead with 1:31 to play. The Hawkeyes made four three-pointers and converted a three-point play to get within one at 73-72 with 16 seconds to play. Iowa tied the game at 74 with three seconds remaining in regulation.

Iowa opened scoring in a low-scoring overtime period with a layup to lead 76-74. Ohio State scored the next five points to take a 79-76 lead with 1:19 to play. The Hawkeyes got within one after a pair of free throws, but McMahon responded with a layup and the Buckeyes led by an 81-78 margin with 44 seconds remaining. Ohio State closed the game at the line to win by an 86-78 margin.

  • McMahon scored in double figures for the 19th time this season and totaled 25 points today, including 12 points in the fourth quarter/overtime. This is her sixth 20-point game of the season. She is the first Buckeye since Sheldon to score 25 or more points in back-to-back games as McMahon also had 25 against Minnesota on Thursday.
  • Elsa Lemmilä led the game with three blocks to bring her season total to 47 blocks. She has a block in 20 games this season.
  • Q1: Ohio State shot 4-of-8 (.500) from long range in the quarter and outrebounded Iowa by a 10-8 margin.
  • Q2: This is the 14th quarter this season that Ohio State has held its opponent to less than 10 points in a quarter.
  • Q4: After Iowa cut Ohio State’s lead to 53-51 with 7:34 to play, the Buckeyes responded with a 10-3 run. The Hawkeyes tied the game with free throws with three seconds left in regulation.
