COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland men’s basketball guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie was one of 50 student-athletes named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List. The award is given annually by the USBWA to the most outstanding player in men’s college basketball.
Gillespie is averaging the second-most points for the Terrapins this season, at 14.6 per game. Gillespie has scored in double-figures in all but four games this season for Maryland, including a season-high 27 against UCLA. Gillespie is one of the top assisters in the Big Ten, ranking sixth in the conference with 4.7 per game. Gillespie also ranks fourth in the Big Ten in total steals with 41 and sixth in steals per game with 1.86. Gillespie is shooting 41.5% from behind the arc, and ranks second in the conference in three-pointers made with 54.
The Oscar Robertson Trophy winner is to be announced at the NCAA Men’s Final Four in San Antonio, from April 5-7. The formal presentation of the trophy will follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. A final watch list will be released in early March and those chosen will be included on the USBWA’s annual awards ballot.
Gillespie and the No. 18 Terps return to action on Thursday, as they travel to Columbus to face Ohio State. Tip-off is schedule for 7:00 p.m., and the game will be available on both FS1 and the Maryland Sports Radio Network
