Efforts Focused on Sustainability, Youth Wellness, Military Appreciation, Social Justice, Among Other Causes
NEW YORK — Jan. 23, 2025 — Super Bowl LIX will leave a lasting impact on the New Orleans community through nearly 40 charitable events and activations, fostering meaningful engagement and creating a positive philanthropic legacy that endures long after the big game.
Super Bowl Week community activities include numerous events to uplift underserved communities throughout the New Orleans region, Salute to Service events to honor our nation’s military and veterans, activations to engage local youth, community greening initiatives and volunteer projects involving the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award presented by Nationwide nominees.
Throughout the week, the NFL will partner with local stakeholders for a series of community greening projects to reduce the environmental impact of Super Bowl LIX and create a “green legacy” in the greater New Orleans region. In the week leading up to the big game, projects will be implemented to plant trees and make improvements at Hardin Park in New Orleans, create a coastal forest to mitigate storm damage in the town of Madisonville, and install a living shoreline along Louisiana’s southern coast to help protect against further land loss due to natural disasters and rising sea levels.
The NFL will connect with the military community through Salute to Service, the NFL’s initiative to honor, empower and connect with active-duty service members, veterans and their families. Alongside partners the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) and Move United, the week will begin with the USA Wheelchair Football League Salute to Service Championship game, bringing veterans together through football. The week will continue with Salute to Service Military Appreciation Day, providing free admission for active-duty service members, veterans, and their families to Super Bowl Experience presented by Panini. Additionally, the NFL and Salute to Service charitable partner USO will host a special baby shower event for military families with a newborn or expecting a baby.
The United States Marine Corps will perform the flyover at Super Bowl LIX. Through Salute to Service, the NFL thanks service members year-round and is proud to showcase the USMC’s elite pilots and air crew operating a formation of V-22 Osprey aircraft at the league’s biggest event. The USMC will demonstrate the Osprey’s multi-functional capabilities, including flying vertically as a helicopter and horizontally as a plane. The NFL is proud to host the Military District of Washington’s multi-service military honor guard to proudly showcase our nation’s colors during the National Anthem.
Through the NFL’s Inspire Change social justice initiative, the NFL is collaborating with Second Harvest Food Bank and the New Orleans Recreation Department Commission to address food insecurity in the Lower Ninth Ward community. As part of the event, the NFL is funding a new Second Harvest Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market, a mobile grocery store that will improve access to nutritious food in this community.
The NFL will support the LGBTQ+ community throughout the week in New Orleans in a number of ways. The fourth annual “A Night of Pride with GLAAD” presented by Smirnoff celebrates LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports, and the future of sports for all. The NFL will also welcome youth and their families from the New Orleans Pride Center for a special flag football clinic at the Play Football Field presented by Invisalign at the Super Bowl Experience presented by Panini. Participants will be coached in flag football techniques by members of the Crescent City Football League, National Gay Flag Football League and USA Football coaches.
The Super Bowl LIX Source program brings Super Bowl-related contracts, professional development and networking opportunities to more than 200 local, diverse businesses in the New Orleans area. In partnership with the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee, the local, minority, woman, person with disabilities, LGBTQ+ and veteran-owned businesses in the program participated in both virtual and in-person business development workshops to prepare their businesses to compete for Super Bowl LIX contracts and various jobs the game will bring to New Orleans. NFL Source suppliers have secured contracts to work a myriad of jobs over the days and months leading up to Super Bowl LIX, including catering, transportation, entertainment, décor, staging, construction, security, and more.
The NFL will also bring awareness to the vital work of local organizations that address domestic violence, sexual assault and trafficking in the New Orleans area, as part of its annual Unsung Heroes Celebration. The NFL will host a special brunch and fireside chat celebrating and thanking employees, advocates, and volunteers from these organizations for their hard work and dedication in this space.
Throughout the week, the NFL will engage with local youth through the Character Playbook initiative and NFL PLAY 60. The NFL Character Playbook Speaker Series – Super Bowl LIX event will bring together students from across the country to discuss the importance of building healthy relationships. In addition, the NFL will host 1,000 students from across New Orleans for the annual NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day, where youth will have the opportunity to participate in PLAY 60 themed fitness zone stations.
Every year, the NFL seeks to leave a lasting legacy in the surrounding communities of the Super Bowl host city through the Super Bowl Legacy Grant Program. Through a joint $3 million contribution from the NFL Foundation and the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee, the Super Bowl Legacy Grant Program will provide vital funds to local nonprofits with proven track records of benefiting underserved groups in New Orleans. This year’s grants will support local nonprofits in areas including education, health and wellness, social justice, and youth and young adults.

LIVING SHORELINE OYSTER REEF PROJECT
South Louisiana is experiencing some of the fastest rates of land loss on the planet, a crisis caused by sea level rise, hurricanes and deprivation of sediment from coastal wetlands. The consequences of floods, storm surge, wave action, and reduced wildlife habitat have disproportionately affected disadvantaged and underserved communities. The severity of the situation is on full display in Leeville, where much of the town has been lost. During Super Bowl week on Monday, Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., NFL Green and the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee will join special forces veterans from FORCE BLUE, the Coalition to restore coastal Louisiana (CRCL), and community volunteers to move 59 tons of bagged oyster shells into the water near the boat ramp in Leeville, Lafourche Parish, creating a living shoreline that will provide habitat for new oysters and other wildlife to slow the rate of erosion. The location is Theogene B. Melancon Boat Launch and John Boudreaux Pier Leeville, LA boat ramp and fishing pier in Lafourche Parish (24359 Old Hwy 1, Golden Meadow, LA 70357).
Volunteers will also plant thousands of marsh grasses. The project will contribute to storm surge protection for inland communities. The 59 tons of oyster shells were collected by CRCL and Chefs Brigade, a consortium of Gulf Coast restaurants, chefs and caterers working to preserve Louisiana’s coast, and through a grant from NOAA. Chefs Brigade’s mobile restaurant partners and off-bottom oyster partners will be on-site to provide a taste of New Orleans to volunteers and media. NFL Green and Super Bowl LIX Committee are partnering with CRCL, FORCE BLUE, Lafourche Parish, Verizon, Entergy, Dow Chemical and Venture Global for the Living Shoreline Project. Media are welcome to join the volunteers on a chartered bus from New Orleans to Leeville at 8 a.m. or join onsite. The drive is approximately 90 minutes from New Orleans.

SUPER BOWL LIX SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is a core focus for the NFL, and the league is committed to reducing the environmental impact at each of our events. The NFL, the New Orleans Super Bowl LIX Host Committee, the New Orleans Saints, NFL sponsor Verizon, and Super Bowl Host Committee sponsors Entergy, Venture Global and Dow Chemical have teamed up for a series of community greening projects to reduce the environmental impact of Super Bowl LIX and create a “green legacy” in the greater New Orleans area. In the days leading up to Super Bowl LIX, projects will be implemented to plant trees and make improvements at Hardin Park, create a coastal forest to mitigate storm damage in the Town of Madisonville, and install a living shoreline in Leeville to help slow land loss. Habitat will be restored and a section of the Mississippi River Delta will be reforested with the planting of 5,900 trees (100 for each Super Bowl) in partnership with Verizon.
Further, each Super Bowl presents specific sustainability challenges and opportunities, and the NFL is constantly adapting to address the unique regional, operational, and cultural aspects of each event. The NFL strives to not only make each Super Bowl more sustainable than the last but to also leave a lasting “green legacy” in the host’s community. In collaboration with the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee, the NFL is:
Donating materials and food: The NFL is focused on ensuring that reusable materials can find a second home long after Super Bowl LIX concludes.
- Over 20 local organizations: The NFL has identified more than 20 local organizations – including food banks, coastal restoration groups, local schools, art studios, and more – to reuse and repurpose Super Bowl items into second uses.
- Material donations: Last year, an estimated $300,000+ of food and items were donated to local organizations in Las Vegas, a figure the NFL expects to exceed this year in New Orleans. The NFL expects to donate thousands of pounds of food, and hundreds of thousands of square feet of materials such as carpet, vinyl, plywood, and fence mesh, amongst much more.
Improving recycling: The NFL is ramping up recycling efforts, both for fans and behind the scenes.
- 200 recycling bins added for fans: The NFL is providing an extra 200 recycling bins on gameday and at Super Bowl Experience (SBX), providing 15,000 gallons of extra recycling space. Around 20 sustainability staff will be onsite at the bins with the highest foot traffic to help fans navigate where to dispose of their items and answer any other sustainability questions.
- Added sorting behind the scenes: Behind the scenes, the NFL is sorting through recycling bags to minimize contamination and maximize the bottles and cans that are recycled. This sorting will take place on gameday, as well as at SBX and other events around town.
Hosting Zero Waste events: The NFL will showcase material recovery and recycling efforts through two Zero Waste events.
- Two Zero Waste events: The NFL is proud to announce that two Super Bowl Week events, the Commissioner’s Party and NFL House, are expected to be zero waste, meaning 90%+ of waste accumulated will be diverted from landfills.
- Eye towards the future: The NFL is also monitoring the diversion rates for other Super Bowl Week events and on gameday, with the goal to increase zero waste events next year.
Tracking and reducing carbon: The NFL is incrementally improving its work to understand and combat its carbon footprint.
- Carbon tracking: The NFL is calculating the emissions for various elements of Super Bowl LIX, including energy used at the stadium, fuel burned for staff flights, and the carbon footprint of the food & merchandise sold at the game. These measurements will be used to help the NFL plan and prioritize actions to reduce carbon for future events.
- Zero-emission energy: Local energy provider Entergy plans to provide renewable energy throughout the city of New Orleans on Super Bowl Sunday and the surrounding days. We are also exploring offsets for additional emissions associated with travel, food & beverage, and merchandise.
Focusing on impacts beyond Super Bowl LIX: The NFL strives to leave a lasting “green legacy” in the communities that host signature events.
- Recycling for coastal restoration: Glass recycled on gameday will be used to create sand for coastal restoration in Southern Louisiana. This will add to the efforts of NFL Green to restore coastal restoration through collecting and repurposing 59 tons of oyster shells to fight coastal erosion.
- New recycling protocols at Caesars Superdome: The NFL, in collaboration with stadium staff, is introducing new ways to recycle at Caesars Superdome – such as procedures to label, sort, and move trash bags. These new protocols can be replicated for additional stadium events post-Super Bowl LIX.
