Ohio State defeated No. 8/10 Maryland by a 74-66 margin on Thursday evening.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12/12 Ohio State women’s basketball team (18-1, 7-1 B1G) defeated No. 8/10 Maryland (16-3, 6-2 B1G) by a 74-66 margin on Thursday evening inside Value City Arena for its first top-10 win of the season.
Maryland got off to a quick start and led by a 22-12 margin after the first quarter. Ohio State got as close as six points in the second quarter and went to the locker room trailing by a 34-27 margin. The Buckeyes took their first lead of the game with a 15-0 run in the third quarter and held the 57-54 advantage after 30 minutes of play. Ohio State scored the first seven points of the fourth and earned the 74-66 win.
Cotie McMahon was the first Buckeye to reach double figures and finished the game with 14 points. Kennedy Cambridge scored a career-high 12 points. Jaloni Cambridge (20) and Taylor Thierry (13) also scored in double figures. J. Cambridge has scored 20 or more points in four of her last five games and also tied her career-high eight rebounds.
How it Happened
Maryland opened the game with the first five points before J. Cambridge got Ohio State on the board. The Buckeyes called timeout trailing 9-2 after four minutes of play. OSU faced a 13-8 deficit just past the midway point of the quarter and trailed 22-12 after 10 minutes.
The Terrapins scored the first four points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 26-12 with 8:37 remaining in the frame. Taylor Thierry and K. Cambridge both made three-pointers to get the Buckeyes within 10 points at 30-20 with six minutes to play. Ohio State held Maryland scoreless for nearly five minutes and used a 6-0 run to trim the deficit to 32-26. The Buckeyes trailed 34-27 going into the locker room at halftime.
J. Cambridge opened the third quarter with the Buckeyes’ first four points as OSU got within five, 36-31, with 9:21 to play in the quarter. The Terrapins scored the next four points and then the teams traded baskets as Maryland held the 50-40 advantage with 5:50 remaining in the third. Ohio State scored six points in 20 seconds, including two baskets off steals, to cut the deficit to 50-46 and force a UMD timeout. The Buckeyes extended their run to 15-0 over three-and-a-half minutes to take a 55-50 lead with two minutes to play in the quarter – their first lead of the game. Ohio State led by a 57-54 margin after 30 minutes.
Ohio State scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 64-54 with 7:49 to play. The Buckeyes led by as many as 11 points at 66-55 with 6:24 remaining. Maryland used a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 68-62 with three minutes to play before McMahon answered with a jumper. J. Cambridge made a layup and put the Buckeyes up double digits again at 72-62 and then capped the Buckeyes’ scoring in the game.

- This is the second time this season that the Buckeyes have come back from a halftime deficit against a ranked opponent to win the game.

- The Buckeyes tied their season-low six turnovers for the fourth time this season.
- Cotie McMahon reached double figures for the 13th time this season. She was the first Buckeye in double figures and totaled 14 points.
- Kennedy Cambridge tied her career-high 10 points in the third quarter and finished the game with a new career-high 12 points. This is the first game of her career that she’s made more than one three-pointer as she was 2-of-5 (.400) from long range tonight.
- Taylor Thierry’s 10th double-figure scoring performance of the season was good for 13 points.
- Jaloni Cambridge scored in double figures for the 11th time this season and finished with 20 points. She also tied her career-high eight rebounds.
- Elsa Lemmilä had four blocks tonight – the fifth game this season she’s totaled at least four blocks.
- Q2: The Buckeyes held the Terrapins without a field goal for the final 5:28 of the quarter.
- Q3: Ohio State used a 15-0 run to take its first lead of the game with three minutes remaining in the quarter and did not surrender the lead. The Buckeyes shot 11-of-18 (.611) from the floor in the quarter.
