Ryan Conwell leads all scorers with 21 points
NEW YORK –Ryan Conwell led three Musketeers in double figures as Xavier fell, 79-71, in overtime at No. 20 St. John’s on Wednesday evening at Madison Square Garden.
Xavier moved to 12-8 overall and 4-5 BIG EAST, while St. John’s moved to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in BIG EAST action.
Xavier returns home this weekend to host UConn on Saturday, January 25, at Cintas Center. The Musketeers and the Huskies get underway at 8:00 p.m. on FOX.
NOTABLE
- After St. John’s scored the opening basket, Xavier went on a 7-0 run to move in front. After trading leads for the first 10 minutes of the game, another 7-0 Musketeer run gave Xavier a two-possession lead. The Musketeers held the two-basket advantage going into the final three minutes of the first half, using a 9-0 run to stretch the lead out to as many as 14, 40-26, in the first half before going into halftime up 10, 40-30.
- Three Musketeers hit double figures in the first half, with Ryan Conwell leading all scorers with 12 and Zach Freemantle and Dailyn Swain each adding 10.
- Xavier stretched the lead out to 16 points in the opening minutes of the second half with a 10-4 run. The Musketeers maintained a double-figure lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half before St. John’s used an 8-0 run to pull within six. The Red Storm outscored Xavier 17-8 over the next six minutes to take a three point lead, 63-60, going into the final three minutes. Xavier lead briefly before SJU tied it up and sent the game to overtime. The Red Storm took an eight-point lead to open the overtime period and never trailed, winning 79-71.
- Ryan Conwell finished with 21 points to lead all scorers, hitting four threes.
- Dailyn Swain went 6-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to set a new career high of 16 points, topping his previous career high of 15.
- Zach Freemantle added 14 points for the Musketeers.
- Xavier finished the game shooting 40 percent from the floor (24-60) and 40 percent from three (8-20) after shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half (13-26) and 66.7 percent from three (4-6). St. John’s shot 46.7 percent (28-60) from the floor overall and 8.3 percent from three (1-8), and connected on 60.9 percent (14-23) of its shots in the second half.
- Marcus Foster led Xavier with seven rebounds as the Musketeers were out rebounded 37-30. SJU had a 11-9 advantage on offensive boards, leading to a 20-13 advantage on second-chance points.
- Dayvion McKnight finished with six assists, as Xavier had 20 assists on 24 made baskets.
- Each team had 14 turnovers but the Red Storm finished with a 17-11 advantage on points off miscues.
