WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Fifth-year guard Micah Parrish scored a career-high 22 points and Ohio State erased a 16-point deficit to comeback for a 73-70 victory over No. 11 Purdue on Tuesday night in Mackey Arena.
The win stopped Purdue’s 26-game home winning streak. The Buckeyes have now played five-consecutive one-possession games and improve to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play.
Parrish was a career-best 6-of-8 from long range and also led the team with seven rebounds in addition to his 22 points. He scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half and was 5-of-6 from distance.
Devin Royal returned from a wrist injury to score 16 points and grab six rebounds. He made 3-of-4 clutch free throws in the final three seconds to secure the win.
Bruce Thornton finished with 11 points, six rebounds and a team-high five assists.
After a tough opening half, the Buckeyes shot 66.7 percent in the second half while limiting Purdue to under 40 percent shooting.
Purdue took control of the first half at the midway point with a 12-2 run to take a 29-13 lead. The Buckeyes had eighth first half turnovers and Purdue turned them into 15 points. Conversely, the Buckeyes didn’t score off of any of Purdue’s first half miscues. That led to a 41-28 halftime lead for the Boilermakers.
The Buckeyes came out of the locker room the more aggressive team and used an 11-2 run to cut the lead down to 43-29 just four minutes into the second half. Back-to-back Parrish three-pointers then gave the Buckeyes their first lead of the game at 45-43 and forced a Purdue timeout.
The Buckeye lead was 53-50 with under 10 minutes to play but Purdue went on a 9-0 run, taking advantage of three consecutive Buckeye turnovers, to regain a 59-53 lead. Despite the decibel levels being as high as they were all game, the Buckeyes didn’t go away. They responded with a 9-0 run of their own thanks to five points from Parrish, a jumper by Stewart and a dunk from Royal. OSU led 62-59 at the under-four timeout.
Parrish continued to have a night as he again canned back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead to 68-59 with under three minutes to play. Purdue scored the next eight points aided by two more Ohio State turnovers and the lead was 68-67 with 45 seconds left.
Mobley Jr. knocked down a big shot from the corner with a toe on the lead to push the lead to 70-67. The game then turned into a foul shooting contest in the final 10 seconds and Royal made 3-of-4 attempts to help the Buckeyes hold on for the huge road win.
