RedHawks Head to Kent State for 2 PM Saturday Afternoon Contest

SATURDAY: Miami hits the road for its fifth conference contest of the season at Kent State on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. The RedHawks are now 4-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2005-06 season. Entering this game, Miami ranks fourth nationally in effective field goal percentage (0.589), sixth in three-point percentage (.406), eighth in threes per game (11.1), 11th in field goal percentage (.499), 15th in turnovers forced per game (16.13), 19th in turnover margin (4.4) and 23rd in scoring offense (83.6). Miami also leads the MAC in nine statistical categories, including win percentage (.750) and scoring margin (12.1).

LAST TIME OUT: The Miami University men’s basketball team outlasted Northern Illinois 84-69 Tuesday evening to secure its sixth consecutive win (the largest win streak since the 2005-06 season). Brant Byers led the RedHawks with 17 points, while four other RedHawks scored in double figures. Miami shot over 45% from beyond the arc for the sixth time this season. The Red and White shot better than 50% from the field for the ninth time this season. Miami also forced 15 or more turnovers for the ninth time this season.

ABOUT KENT STATE: Kent State is coming off a 17-17 (8-10 MAC) season in 2023-24. Head coach Rob Senderoff is in his 14th season with the Golden Flashes. Heading into the 2024-25 season, the MAC Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll picked the Golden Flashes to finish third in the conference.

Kent State is currently 11-5 (2-2 MAC), having dropped its last game at home to Western Michigan 83-94. The Golden Flashes have two players who average double figures in scoring, which includes VonCameron Davis (16.0) and Jalen Sullinger (12.1). Davis also leads the team in steals per game (1.4). Cian Medley leads the team in assists per game (4.1), and Cli’Ron Hornbeak has recorded the most rebounds per game (6.7). Hornbeak (0.9) and Delrecco Gillespie (0.7) lead the team in blocks per game. Davis was named to the preseason All-MAC First Team, and Sullinger was named to the preseason All-MAC Second Team.

THE SERIES WITH THE GOLDEN FLASHES: Saturday will mark the 154th time Miami and Kent State have faced off. The RedHawks head into this game leading the series 93-60. Miami also leads the series in Kent 36-35. The last time Miami faced off with the Golden Flashes, the Red and White secured a 71-67 victory on Jan. 30, 2024 in Kent.
