Cambridge and Gray keep OSU Women’s Basketball undefeated after 80-69 win at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 9/8 Ohio State women’s basketball team (17-0, 6-0 B1G) beat Wisconsin (10-8, 1-6 B1G) on Thursday night on the road by an 80-69 margin.

Wisconsin got off to a quick start, but it was Ohio State that had a 22-18 lead after 10 minutes. Jaloni Cambridge scored the Buckeyes’ first 13 points in the second quarter and the Buckeyes held a 39-32 advantage at halftime. The Badgers got as close as three points in the third quarter, but the Buckeyes held the 63-54 lead with one quarter to play. A 17-15 fourth quarter gave Ohio State the 80-69 victory.

J. Cambridge was the game’s first double-figure scorer and totaled 27 points. Chance Gray (22) and Cotie McMahon (17) joined J. Cambridge in double figures. J. Cambridge had a career-high eight rebounds to tie for the team lead with McMahon.

How it Happened
Wisconsin opened the game’s scoring with two quick three-pointers before Ajae Petty got the Buckeyes on the board. Ohio State scored nine points in just over a minute to take a 9-6 lead. The Buckeyes extended their lead to 14-8 on a three-pointer from Gray with 5:25 to play in the quarter. The Badgers tied the game at 16 before back-to-back Buckeye baskets. Ohio State led by a 22-18 margin after one quarter.

J. Cambridge had the first two baskets of the second quarter to reach double figures and extend OSU’s lead to 26-18. J. Cambridge had the Buckeyes’ first six baskets of the quarter and Wisconsin’s first three baskets were triples as Ohio State led 35-27 with 2:33 remaining in the half. Taylor Thierry capped first-half scoring with a fastbreak layup, and the Buckeyes held a 39-32 advantage going into the locker room.

J. Cambridge opened the third quarter with a three-point play to push her over the 20-point plateau. Gray made a pair of three-pointers and McMahon made a pair of baskets as the Buckeyes held a 52-43 lead at the media timeout. An extended 8-2 Wisconsin run got the Badgers within three at 54-51 with 2:12 to play in the quarter, prompting a Buckeye timeout. Ohio State scored back-to-back baskets out of the timeout and ended the quarter with a 63-54 lead.

Gray began scoring in the fourth quarter with her fourth triple of the game and a jumper from McMahon extended OSU’s lead to 68-54 with 9:27 to play. Back-to-back Ohio State baskets, including another three-pointer from Gray, had the Buckeyes ahead 73-57 with just under six minutes remaining. The Badgers cut their deficit to 74-64 with four minutes to play. Scoring was capped at 80-69 on a Wisconsin three-pointer.

Match Notes 

  • The Buckeyes had two players score at least 20 points apiece for the first time since Dec. 17 against Grand Valley State.
  • Ohio State totaled at least 10 steals for the 12th time this season, finishing with 11 steals tonight.
  • Jaloni Cambridge reached double figures with 8:45 left in the second quarter, her 10th game in double figures this season. She finished with 27 points after 19 points on 8-of-10 (.800) shooting in the first half. This is her third 20-point game in the last four games. J. Cambridge also totaled a career-high eight rebounds.
  • Chance Gray recorded her 14th double-figure game of the season and totaled 22 points. She was 5-of-9 from behind the arc. This is her eighth game of the season with three or more three-pointers and her fifth 20-point game of the season. She also tallied her 200th career assist.
  • Cotie McMahon’s 11th double-figure performance of the season was good for 17 points. She added eight rebounds to tie for the team high.
  • Q1: Ohio State shot 9-of-18 (.500) from the floor in the quarter.
  • Q2: J. Cambridge made her first six field goal attempts of the quarter, which were the Buckeyes’ first six baskets of the quarter. She scored 13 points in the second quarter.
  • Q3: Gray led the Buckeyes with 11 points in the quarter.
  • Q4: The Buckeyes outrebounded the Badgers 9-5 in the quarter.
