DAYTON – Alex Huibregtse turned in a season-best and game-high 31 points on a night where he joined the Raider 1,000 point club, but the Wright State men’s basketball team fell in double overtime 120-113 to visiting Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday night inside the Nutter Center.
The Raiders now look to turn the page quickly as they hit the road to take on Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon in a 2 p.m. tipoff.
Wright State (9-10, 3-5 Horizon) led for most of regulation before the sides traded free throws in the closing 52 seconds to go to the first opening session. The Raiders had a five-point advantage with a minute to play in the first overtime, but Purdue Fort Wayne (14-6, 7-2 Horizon) responded with the final five points to head to a second extra session.
In the second overtime, Wright State scored four of the first seven points before Purdue Fort Wayne three-pointer gave the visitors the lead that turned out to be for good. The Raiders pulled within two on an Andrew Welage three-pointer with 1:22 to play, but the visitors closed the night with six of the final seven points.
Huibregtse opened the night with a pair of three-pointers to get the Raider scoring going, later connecting on another triple at the nine-minute mark of the first half for his 11th point of the game to reach the milestone mark and the 39th member of the Wright State 1,000 Point Club.
Wright State led by as many as 10 points in the first half before taking a 48-42 advantage into the locker room. Purdue Fort Wayne chipped away at the Raider lead over the first six minutes of the second half, tying the score at 57-all with 14:07 to play and setting up the back-and-forth rollercoaster down the stretch and into the extra sessions.
Huibregtse’s 31 points was one shy of his career best from last January at Cleveland State, also an overtime contest, as he finished the night 7-of-14 from three-point range while adding four rebounds and four assists in 47 minutes of action. Brandon Noel logged 47 minutes of his own, tallying 23 points on 11-of-17 overall shooting and just missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Jack Doumbia turned in 23 points as well, notching a double-double with 13 rebounds, with all of his scoring coming after the halftime break.
Logan Woods scored 12 of his 14 points in the first 20 minutes, while Welage was the final Raider in double figures with 11 points off the bench thanks in part to a trio of three-pointers. Keaton Norris chipped in three points but racked up eight rebounds and eight assists.
Wright State ended the night shooting 50 percent overall (42-of-84) and as 12-of-32 from deep (38 percent), while the Raiders connected at 81 percent at the free throw line (17-of-21). Purdue Fort Wayne shot 52 percent overall (42-of-79) and was 49 percent (16-of-33) from three-point range while going 20-of-25 (80 percent) at the stripe.
Five Purdue Fort Wayne players combined for all but 10 of the visitors’ points, with Jalen Jackson finishing with 30 points.
